Red "tree" sponge

I've got these red "tree" sponges (not sure what they are) that grow tall. Can I trim the tops back? I don't want to kill them if this is a bad idea, but they have grown to the top of the water column and I don't want to risk exposure to air.

Use a sharp razor blade and slice it.
