Your fish look happy. I really like the rockwork. How are you liking it so far? Now....do you wish you went bigger? Even the guys/girls that end up getting like a 450 then wish for something bigger. Just wondering if you think the same thing. I really like the size. It looks perfect. I might not have understood you before, but did you use white lacquer on the stand? Or was it a clear lacquer and white paint?

I love my pixie hawkfish. He has a bunch personality. Usually the only fish that continues to follow me when all the others realize it's not feeding time.

Your tank cycled in 9 days?
Just looking at the dates on the pictures from the 12th to the 21st when you have fish. |

At least half of the rock is from my old system(s), transfered directly to the new system. The new rock was dry base rock from someplace out west, I pressure washed it all before putting it in so it was pretty clean. The new rock and sand had several days to be exposed with bacteria from the old stuff, there is probably 200 - 250 lbs of rock in the tank. I seeded the sand with several cups of old stuff immediately when the new sand went in. There shouldn't be any cycle at all, nothing to "die off" to cause one.

Did you experience any flooding? I heard it was pretty bad in Findlay.

Pretty bad here... Topped the worst ever 1913 100 yr flood. Nothing at our house but get a little further toward downtown and it's bad. Our neighborhood sits pretty high in the city but even here a lot of the basements got flooded. We have a lot of businesses who have been here longer than me who won't reopen. It's a shame...
I got called into work Wednesday morning before noon and got off Thursday night around nine. Worked with the Coast Guard guys (the ones with the airboats you may have seen on TV) from our staging area at the high school. What a great group of professionals!!! A lot of people here are going to need a lot of prayers answered. Tim

WOW!!! I was just looking at these pics and the tank has changed a lot in a month... I'll post some new pics soon.
Got a Little Giant pump to replace the Quiet One need some time now so I can plumb it in and see how it works... Tim

looks good, do you plan on using Power heads or is the eductors good enough ? Also have you thought about a chiller ?

The eductors do a pretty good job when I open the pump up but the noise from the pump increases dramatically then too. I'll be switching out the pump in the very near future to remedy this. I'd also like to but them on a 2-way OM Squirt, I think I might be able to add a couple lower in the tank that way.
Right now I have a Seio 620 helping while the pump is throttled back and I get OK movement. I have thought about a chiller but since it's cooled off here from the 90s I seem to be doing good on the temp. I have a line on one but think it's a little too big for a 120... great price though if I do it (and he still has it). I'm really tempted to go the window AC route, the people we bought our house from undersized the central AC and it could use a little supplimental help anyway. As it is with 2 - 250W MHs and 2 - 96W PCs and one fan going it stays around 78F - 80F... not too bad if you ask me... Tim

A couple updates... ASM G2 skimmer installed and working pretty good. I also installed a couple CoralVue 12000K 250W bulbs, not visually as bright as I'd like but I LOVE the color and it seems all may frags do too, I'm getting a lot of growth. I'm still dosing my kent 2 part basically to use it up but I have the big Coralife CA reactor to install when I get the time. I'm still using the Quiet one pump but have a new Little Giant external to install when time allows, I like the eductors I built but if I open the QuietOne up the pump's internal noise is practically unbearable... So, I have a couple of the SureFlow 1600s that add an ungodly amount of flow when they are both on. For the price I don't know how you could beat them. I did try one on my Red Sea WaveMaster Pro, it worked fine for a while... now it's hit and miss for that one to restart so the wave maker is a no go. As far as the operation of the tank, I had a very minor cyano outbreak about a month ago so I added the Sure Flow and it went away. Otherwise no problems! That's it for now! Happy Thanksgiving! Tim

I have some new video once I get it uploaded. Things are progressing nicely. I just set up my Ca reactor and have run in to some difficulty getting Ca and Alk in the right neighborhoods. I've been doing some reading on some great info I got in the chemistry forum.
I'll post the vids Saturday! Tim

Sorry my focus is a little off but here are a couple new pics from this morning. The setup is moving along great, about 8 weeks ago the tomato clowns started acting different and alot more agressive. It took that long for them to start spawning again in the new system. Enjoy my slightly out of focus pics

You say you used kolarscape sand from walmart the kolarscape i seen says not to use in an aquarium. If this is what you used I might have to go get some so when i empty my tank i can switch to the sand over crushed coral and then just buy a bag of live sand to seed The tank looks awesome

Mine said "not for aquarium use" too. It had a lot of fines in it and I had to rinse it really well first and it was fine. As for buying a bag of "live sand" skip it, and get a couple cups of sand from a buddy to do the same thing. Our local Wal Marts don't have Kolorscape this year, they have Pavestone play sand that look like its silica based.
This is what I used; Tim

Wow! I just looked at this old thread, things have changed. I got a little lax and didn't do water changes and my nitrates went through the roof. I've been dosing vodka religiously for the last 3 weeks (approx.) and I'm down around 10 now, I did some water changes for a few days before I started too. I don't know exactly what has helped the most since I put a new DIY CA reactor on line at the same time replacing the Coralife that's been running since around the first of the year give or take. This is the new reactor built from scratch, my first acrylic project!
It seems to use a lot more CO2 than the Coralife unit ever did. My numbers right now are: NO3 - ~>10 I bumped the vodka dose up yesterday because the decline had seemed to stop. I'm at 1.8ml/day now. I would consider the decrease in nitrates to be dramatic considering what the initial readings were. PO4 - >0 but close KH - 12 CA - 420 pH - 8.0 SG - 1.025 The lights are off right now and I haven't taken any pics for a while. I'll post some pics again this weekend. The tank does has some really good stuff going on too. All the fish except the green chromis have done great and many of them are over 2 or three years old. The chromis have wasted away 1 by one. They get emaciated looking like they are 100 years old then disappear. some of they corals have overtaken their vicinity and look pretty good. Others are long gone. I'll post pics soon! Tim
