What happens when you just let them grow???
xxtriggermanxx, I know you wanted to see some large colonies and I was going to post this before your thread was locked.
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1888199 So, this Bud's, I mean, this thread's for you my friend, enjoy. FYI, for those who don't know, this is how they are collected from the ocean floor. I tip my hat to these guys below. Awesome job !!! http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...hlight=geoxman http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/20...totm/index.php http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2009-04/totm/index.php http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...=actinics+only Before names and sky high prices began in 2005, we use to just let them grow like this. Aren't they beautiful? Mucho Reef PS, if anyone has large colonies to share, please post them here. I think xxtriggermanxx would be very happy and appreciative to see them.

Awesome, thank you for sharing that. If you can, next time, try to decrease the size of your pictures using your photo editor so we can enjoy the entire picture on the screen. Thanks again, much respect for letting them grow.
Mucho

Great links Mucho.
I'll try and get some pictures of the colonies I have up later, when the lights come on.

I have always enjoyed Geo's tank.
Mucho or anyone else, Do you know if he has been around at all lately? I know life was crazy for him even when his tank was at its peak. It would be nice to know the current status of it. |

Mine was growing pretty good till the Snow Flakes broke out all over. And I use the leave it alone method for growth as well.

These aren't the largest colonies I've ever seen, but they are the biggest I have now. Here's everything warts and all

Mooch, I think you have uncovered the true "rare" aspect of keeping zoas here. I'm guessing grown-in, full tank colonies are becoming very 'LE' (pun intended)

mucho,
I have to say you got me hooked. I saw some pics of your reef a while back and realized how much I love zoas. It has been my goal to have large colonys ever since. Here is where I'm at after about a year of just letting them grow. Cheer's Mucho to fighting the good fight!

They can be collected like that from the ocean floor. But they also occur like this: -Who Dah?

Well xxtriggermanxx, again I tried. Two threads and several weeks of waiting and only a few pics of large colonies. Either no one is allowing them to grow because of sky high per polyp sales/profits, or many frags ( polyps ) are dying from excessive fragging, premature fragging or improper fragging/attachment.
Thanks to all of those reefers for just letting them grow and for posting pictures. Mucho

Not sure what you were trying to tell me there. They are indeed collected as small, med, large and huge rocks. My goal in creating this thread was to showcase large colonies which we seldom see. Many people new to the hobby believe that they are collected as frags and some truly never knew they grew to large size colonies.

Heya Mucho! I just wanted to point out that they occur in huge colonies on the ocean floor (as you had mentioned in the first thread) as well as onesie-twosie on the ocean floor too for the benefit of those that didn't know otherwise. I didn't want folks to have the impression that they always occurred in huge colonies on the ocean floor.
That previously posted photo in particular is one of my favorites for such an example. It was shot at about 35-40 feet deep in the Florida Keys (I believe off Marathon, I forget now). But the significance is that it was this singular, bright, rainbow colored (Paly?) polyp (in the middle of the photo) surrounded by onesie-twosie zoanthids that were black (or very dark purple) with yellow ring and silver center. Of course, very near to that onsie-twosie shot it is what you were referencing in the first post. Looking through my photos, looks like I didn't take any wide-range shots of colonies, but one saw this blue with yellow center morph Zoa in colonies several feet wide :

Now I can't say I never frag em, but most of my frags go right back into the same tank to start other colonies. I would love to say I feel your pain Mucho but it's a whole different market up here in Western Canada. All we really have access to is colonies and at fairly good prices to boot, that being said allot of the very high end pallys that I see here are not available for sale. My favorite thing about zoas is picking up a colony for $50.00 and then watching it color up into something like this: [/QUOTE] |
