BK Mini 180 for Red Sea 450?

Hello and good day everyone!

Well, that didn't take long - going to upgrade from my Red Sea 170 (currently running with BK Double Cone 130 which is kicking some serious butt!) to a Red Sea 450.

Wondering if the Bubble King Mini 180 would be a good fit? Any other options? I saw someone purchase a BK SM200 which is way too much according to specs but they seem to be doing okay with it...

As usual, thanks for the advice!

An SM200 would be WAY too large and while it will work, it won't work nearly as consistently let alone have the range of tuning from dry to wet as the smaller skimmers would. The Double Cone 180 would be OK. That's what Marco runs on RSR 450. You could also go with a Mini 160 or Mini 180. Any of the 3 would work well. I have a 100 gallon display that I run a Mini 160 on. I have a very small skimmer compartment on that system which relocated me to the Mini but even at 100 gallons, the Mini 160 is more than up to task and is extremely consistent despite there only being 2 fish in that tank at the moment. Ultimately its about fish load. If you're not going to have a lot of fish then smaller will be much better from a consistency and tuning standpoint. I hear people talk about their "heavy loads" all the time and when confronted with the fact that an honestly heavy load is 1/2" of fish per display gallon, they often realize just how heavy the load in their tank really isn't.

I know we are out of Mini 160's and won't have any for about a month or so when the next shipment arrives. It would appear that Aquarium Specialy has the Mini 180 in stock.

Thank you Slief - I was looking to buy the Double Cone 180 with the newer pump. Actually placed an order with Aquarium Specialty for one they had in stock but they called me to inform that they made a mistake and have none in stock. Anyway, waiting on Premier now to see if they got one with the latest shipment.

My Red Sea 450 is being setup tomorrow - got delayed by the birth of my fourth child...but I've definitely been enjoying seeing the skimmer waiting patiently on the dining room table every day

I'll post some photos once it's all up and running. Will be interesting to see both systems running side by side: my Red Sea E-170 and the 450 reefer. Of course, both with BK skimmers.

You guys have a good evening! I'm going to go not sleep tonight...

Congrats on the baby! Hope you get some sleep! Been there done that. I'm a grand parent now and thankful I can get some occasional sleep!
