Time for an update

It's been awhile since i last posted, the tank has gone through a rough phase recently. Decided to make one large change and switch from LED's to the proven old school T5 fixture.

ATI 8 x 80w. Going to supplement with 2 Kassil A360s

Saltwater Mixing Containers

The Iwaki100 pump allows me to transfer the reverse osmosis water from the right container to the left mixing container to make the saltwater.

The clear tubing attached to the pump return is for doing water changes. The tubing travels up and along the ceiling and is connected to the middle section of the refugium.

The Right Container:

--65 Gallons
-- Reverse Osmosis Water
--Connected to the RO/DI system by the blue line at the top with a float valve

The Left Container:

--65 Gallons
-- Mixed Saltwater
--Heater

Chaeto needs to rotate for photosynthesis with a power head. Otherwise bottom and ball will disintegrate.

Have you considered having a uv sterilizer on the salt water mixing station. Bacteria growth could have negative effect on livestock.

I have an extra tunze powerhead laying around. Might install it in the refugium over the weekend. Thanks

This is not true. I have seen MANY instances, including on my own system, where the chaeto grows like a champ with no rotation. It may simply have a different growth pattern. Mars aqua 300 and Sun Systems 150W sodium lights have both been tremendous for me. If you have lower light than these offer (e.g., incandescent), then maybe you need to tumble it...

I think it may have something to do with depth and lighting in the sump. I have had instances of chaetomorpha turning brown and dying off on the bottom of the clump. The dead stuff accumulates in the bottom of the sump and has to be vacuumed out. Rolling the clump with a small pump serves to keep the whole mass healthy and green.

Leather ID?!

Does anyone know what type of leather this is (assuming its a leather)? Is it harmful / will any fish eat it? (to get rid of it)

This is a great build. Any improvements since you changed lights? What was wrong with the leds?

+1. Why not use the orpheks with the t5? Or stay with LED only, or go t5 only?

There was nothing wrong with the orpheks, I was getting nice colors and polyp extension. I simply wanted to try something new (had the orpheks for a few years now). I've seen some good results browsing different threads with the T5 LED combo.

The orpheks with the ATI fixture would take up way too much space, that I did not have.

One thing to note is T5 drowns out a majority of shimmer, but with the kessils intensity cranked up you get a little.

Great build! Are you happy with the ATI 8X80 and 2 Kessil A360 setup?
