Long overdue update!!

Time for a long overdue update. I've made progress with the tank:

- Finished side trim and top grating, which is all detachable through shelf brackets and adhesive to allow me access to the overflow area if needed for adjustments and maintenance

- Removed my RW4s. They were ok on one half of the tank, but the water stalled at the far side of the peninsula. I added a Maxspect Gyre 130, so far this thing is amazing, the flow is perfect for my tank. Have it at setting 5 and even at that setting the flow is incredible.

- Removed my sand bed and replaced with travertine tile. Over the long term, this will be easier for maintenance. Had a temporary nutrient spike (0.02 on the Hanna for phosphates), but everything is looking good.

- Did some more trim on the stand, added venting, mounted controllers, etc.

- Added 165W Chinese LED fixture to my refuge, which will become my frag area.

- I did a bunch of other stuff, can't remember it all, onto the pictures.

It's so nice to see an update. One of the coolest builds that I've seen. Your acros are looking really vibrant and healthy. Great work all around

Very nice looking tank, great progress. It will be gorgeous when all corals grow out. The colors are already so rich!

Thanks for all the comments everyone, hopefully now all that is left to do is watch things start to grow out (knock on wood).

I don't have my 2-part dosers online yet, but my tank is starting to consume ALK fairly quickly which is a good sign, so that is next on the agenda. But after that, not too much to finish.

I am contemplating adding siporax to my refuge/frag area... I like what I'm hearing, I can get rid of the rock that is in that section at present, and sounds like there is very little risk, but potential good return.

Can't hurt and it's got more porosity than live rock..
Looking forward to growing corals!

Really neat build you have going on here, looking forward to seeing how this progresses!

And I really need to put buying a macro lens as a high priority hehe.

I am just cycling a new tank set-up and I added siporax to it in a reactor. I am interested to see how it does. I did not want to put it in the sump as I am hoping to keep this one fairly simple and clean,( ya I know good luck with that ) and keep all detritus traps out of the sump. I went with minimal live rock in the display and wanted more space for bacteria to grow. I hope this stuff is as good as it looks.

Those are my thoughts as well. I think I could box it up like M007 did and put it in my refuge, and then I can take it out periodically and give it a good rinse to keep it clean. Easier IMO than using a reactor over the long term and trying to keep that clean. My refuge area is fed from my return, so the water has gone through the skimmer compartment and through a filter sock on the main BeanAnimal siphon drain, so over time I don't think detritus should be too much of an ongoing issue. I guess like anything though you need to keep on top of it to maintain it.

Thanks, while not mandatory, a macro lens certainly comes in handy at times, especially with corals at the frag stage

Yes, I have concerns about the reactor filling with detritus so it is fed from the return pump compartment. I also removed the foam pads from the reactor( it's a Banshee brand) so that hopefully anything of size will just pass thru. I also have a dedicated pump with a prefilter feeding it so I am hoping for the best. I am thinking that an occasional test for nitrates at the reactor output may be a good idea, your thoughts?

If I did a media reactor, I would feed from the return as well, so might not be much difference really in terms of maintenance, now I'm starting to rethink this. I was just thinking it would be easier to create a box as M007 did from eggcrate (I've got tons) than bring a reactor online (not sure I have one big enough). I'm sure testing for nitrates at the output would be fine... but probably you would want to know where things are at overall in your system?

My bad, I should have clarified. I always test the system, but I was thinking that should nitrates creep up it's nice to know the source. I can't see how Siporax would cause any unless they become a trap for decaying material (?). Just thinking out loud I guess as I am new to this media.
