Seems like this ought to be a sticky.

If sunscreens are as bad as now believed, imagine the effect of putting on SPF lotion and then sticking your arm in an aquarium.

IF we stickied everything that was bad for reefs/environment you would need to go to page 50 to start seeing new threads...

But whats the alternative?

but you know killing off the location of one of the most biologically diverse and contains one of the largest living diversity of creatures on this planet which the health benifit and effect of this on the world is unknow

but as mcgyver said screw the reef who needs it

That article, as well as the original post, is over two years old.

There are now many sunscreens that don't have oxybenzone. Furthermore, when I was on a vacation in Hawaii and went snorkeling at one of the reserves in Maui, a park ranger was there with a sign that discussed the proper sunscreens to use.

True. However, I resurrected this post because of concern about people habitually wearing sunscreen (a lot of ordinary lotions now contain it) and then sticking their arm in their aquarium. A lot of the oxybenzone-free sunscreens contain zinc oxide, which is also potentially very bad for an aquarium.

Exactly. People are widely aware of sunscreen but forget that lots of lotions also contain sunscreen. If people are in the habit of using lotion on their hands, they should start washing their hands extensively before putting them in the tank.

Or just stop putting nasty lotion on their hands in the first place Ever shake a lotion wearer's hand? So gross, and you stand their trying to find a way to wipe it off your own hand without offending them.

You should be washing your hands well before and after putting your hands in the tank anyway.

Or use gloves - which is my preference. I've already ordered shoulder length due to the 30" height of my 240

It's funny because I don't even sneeze around my tank at home.

But we have an open topped, waist-high, 1500 gallon wrap-around tank at work that is exposed to the general public...mainly very small children...and all of the funk they can carry on/in their hands. There's even a hand sanitizer station hanging on the wall nearby, and I have seen more than one handful of that stuff plopped into the tank. The Reef caretaker removes coins, toys, chewing gum, candy, metals, plastics, etc. on a daily basis, and all of the tank's inhabitants are just fine and dandy. I honestly do not understand how this can be, but it is a fact.

Sometimes I question the validity of such articles. I don't think Mother Nature is the primadonna we sometimes make her out to be. Just ask BP Oil.

The disposable shoulder length veterinary exam gloves that can be had at Farm and Fleet are great.
