Thanks for the picture. I haven't been able to see that far under it yet. I'm going to keep a constant supply of small blue legs and snails in there and treat it shrimp and other things as a treat once or twice a week maybe. I just really hate having him in this small tank for now. The wife told be to wait because it's possible we are moving into a nicer home soon. I think If I find a great deal on a larger tank that it will magically set itself up though.

I removed the top of it's cave and scattered the rocks a bit and it seemed to start exploring more. I did not see any tell tail signs of the gonadal sticks. It did a few somersaults as well and I didn't see the sticks. This is the best pic I could get but you can still see that there are no visible gonads near the last leg/ beginning of the swimmerets. I think it may be a girl.

So far she doesn't mind me at all now and I actually touched her tail and no freak out. She doesn't like the cat though. She shot out of her burrow in a threat pose when he got close to the glass. Pretty funny. She also hates the glass scrubber. Launched out of her burrow and gave it a good thump. This shrimp is more like a cat or a dog. I should name it Fido.
I got a real good look at it's underside while it was bringing out some rubble and I'm 100% sure it's a female now. No gonad sticks. Time to rethink the name. Last edited by Fartin'Gary; 05/22/2012 at 05:54 PM. |

I am looking as well for a peacock shrimp, I notice you have it housed in a glass tank, my biocube 29 is glass and I cut an acrylic sheet for the bottom in preparation for a mantis shrimp, any chipping or glass breakage for you? I'm sure Dr. Roy's seen glass cracking but he's housed thousands of these guys. The percentage is quite low right?

What a cool Mantis. I really want one but I am sure I need to do a lot more research before I even began to set a tank up for one. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not worried about her hitting the glass. She's in a 30 gallon now. The ten gallon temp tank was too small and she would smack the front of the glass to try and make room in front of her burrow. As soon as I put in some PVC for her to live in she didnt smack the glass anymore.
