What's That?
Have you ever noticed how difficult it can be, given the varying pronunciations by hobbyists, to recognize spoken reef-related scientific names? Have you wondered how the terms are "supposed" to be pronounced?
I've taken a stab at answering that question here: www.reeftopics.com Put your mouse over a term and you'll hear how I think it's pronounced. However, while I have reason to believe the provided pronunciations are correct (or at least close), it's very possible I've gotten some wrong. So, I need to check people to check my work. If you think there are words that are wrong, let me know. If there are words that should be added to list, let me know that too. - Mark |

Cool.
There were a few that were different from the way I pronounce them. And I found a spelling error on Turbinaria. Scolymia was one that was very different from the way I pronounce it. Julian Sprung has it phonetically pronounced as: SKO-lee-MY-uh

You have most of them wrong or I have most of them wrong.
Mark, this is a great idea and a huge addition to our reef society learning. How about adding Chaetomorpha. Did I spell that right? and Caulastrea. Last edited by MarksReef; 02/10/2007 at 12:39 PM. |

Thanks guys!
Rick, I'd be happy to add pictures if people with much better photography skills than me are inclined to submit them. They can be emailed to me at reefTopics 'at' sites-online.com with a short note indicating they can be be used on the website and, if a photocredit is desired, what it should be. Randy, thanks! Let me know which other ones you pronounce differently... I'll check some other sources and see if there's any sort of consensus. The Scolymia pronunciation was taken from Borneman's "Aquarium Corals" p277. Phonetically (skahl'-ee-my'-ah). Citing sources for differences, as you did, is a huge help. Mark, I forgot to include links to several terms that begin with "c," thanks! Caulastrea is now up there. I'll need to do some research on Chaetomorpha... that's one I always struggle with. - Mark |

Gary, I saw that guy's post but I haven't been able to confirm the pronunciation anywhere else. I haven't found any sources for phonetically spelled anemone names. You don't know of one by any chance?

I pulled that site down when we were moving some servers around. Give me a few days and I'll see if I can find it and put it back up on another server.

Ok, the pronunciation page has been uploaded to:
http://www.fragtastic.com/reefterms Remember that my pronunciations come with no guarantees... use them at your own risk. And, as others have noted, the page only works properly in IE. Mark Last edited by puter; 01/20/2009 at 02:37 AM. |
