Convert HOB skimmer to in Sump

I am working on a new tank which needs some work, and with the new tank I will have a sump instead of my current HOB filtration. I have an Eshopps HOB skimmer which I'd like to convert to a sump skimmer while I decide to either build a larger skimmer, or buy once ment for a 150 gallon tank. I'll be keeping the same live stock as my existing tank, so bioload should be the same even though the tank is larger.

Am I able to just cut the PVC tubes on the skimmer for the inlet and outlet so instead of it hanging off the aquarium, it can simply set in the sump, and the inlet and outlet will be at the base by the pump, submerged and work the same?
