Harlequin Tusk Show off
Harlequin Tusk keeper know that we need to make some sacrifice in our reef tank in order to keep one of this impressive fish.
They need to be added last. No small fish or shrimp can be added after the Tusk is in the tank. Small snails are history. We no longer can have a thriving small snail population for cleaning crew and others.... These are small price to pay to keep this beautiful fish. Let's show off our beautiful fish. Please indicated the size at the time of the picture and where they originated, Australia or Indo-Pacific. To get the ball rolling, here is my Tusk. A 3.5 inches Indo-Pacific Tusk. I had him for about 1 week but he have adapted well to the tank. I had another HT about 10 years ago for many years. He was about 8 inches when I took the tank down and sold him.

These are such nice fish, I am very excited to add one of these to my tank when it's ready. I am planning for one of these and a chevron tang to be my centerpiece fish. I am going to miss the awesome cleanup job my small snails do :P
I have heard stories of HTs that don't touch snails. Maybe I'll luck out |

Photobucket has been all wonky (and now it's painfully slow) for me the last few days and my pics disappeared from my previous posts and I can't edit them, so I'll repost here. Pics of my aussie harlequin tusk I got in December '13 at 3-1/8".
First pic was taken in January '14 when he went into the DT, was approximately 3-1/2" when the pic was taken. Both these two taken in August '14, approximately 5-1/2" |

I found a line on juvenile indio pacific HTs for only $45. The price is good, I would prefer the Aussie but I might just bite, the Aussies are a lot more and seldom appear in my area.

Mine was purchased as an Aussie from QM, but I have my doubts, since as you can see the "red" is pretty muddy orange. Oh well... Wonderful fish, either way

Here is my Tusk today. Getting fat, did not grow much over the last 6 weeks, however, I never seem to notice the growth when I look at him daily. Still missing the R upper tusk at 1 month. I home it grow out soon.

They are magnificent fish! I would like to have one sometime in the future- along with an upgrade first. But am wondering- do they attack clams?

They don't bother my Tridacnid clams but love steamer clams. I have always keep them in my large tank. This is my second Tusk. I had the last one my my 450 gal tank until I break it down. Up to about 8-9 inches.

They are built to eat inverts. So it's entirely possible for them to find interest in clams. Mine initially only ate clams, but then was intimidated by the angel, whose fav food is clams as well. Now he won't even look at them. |

Mine doesn't eat clams. Have 3 in my tank. I have also been lucky as far as my cleaner shrimp. I can't say for sure if he killed and ate all my smaller snails and crabs. Cause every time I turn around I still see a bunch of them roaming around my tank. I love at night when my tusk goes hunting. He keeps himself still pointing at the sand waiting for something to pop out. Then he will see something on the other side of the tank and jet over there looking. Then return to the spot he was at first for hunting. Every night he finds another spot to stalk out
