odyssea splash lense broke?
I have an Odyssea 48 inch metal halide light fixture and the splash lens shattered. Anybody know where I can buy a replacement?

For the price the light is great but I hate to have to buy a whole new light just to get a new splash lens.

I was thinking about that but I think I need glass that filters uv rays ? Or am I thinking of single ended bulbs that require a uv filter?

Did it shatter like tempered glass or crack like normal? Glass by itself filters pretty much all the harmful UV. I doubt they are making any effort beyond that in the original glass, just probably going for a tempered piece for the impact resistance (if you never have hit a piece of tempered glass before, its pretty amazing how hard it can be to break it).
The glass being the filter is why auto-darkening welding helmets are pretty darn safe even when cheap. Its not the electronic junk that does the harmful filtering, just the glass that protects the lcd bits that does. The darkening just lets you see. If that fails because of crappy electronics or dead batteries or poor sensors and you get 'flashed' its just bright, not retina cooking. |

Yeah It shattered like a car window. I still don't know why. All I can think of is that I just got two Maxpect Gyres and they were on alternating flow and splashed the glass??
But yeah shattered into little pieces! So you think I can just have a piece of glass cut from my local glass company and use that? It doesn't have to be special "UV filtering" glass? |

Yep, it is just a piece of tempered glass then. It might be fine with a non-tempered piece too, but it is more fragile. Tempered glass is about 4 times stronger than non-tempered though, for a given size.
And thermal shocking is quite possibly the cause for it breaking. Depending on how close the bulb is to the glass it can get really hot. Then cool a spot really fast with some water and boom. |
