Frag rack in Sump

Has anyone tried this yet?

If so, are there any cons to it and what lights are you using?

I would run a custom LED set up and add an extra powerhead for flow if you don't have enough flow. My return section has slime and **** all over from low flow and lights to grow my cheato from my sump (5000k spiral bulb), my plan is to do LEDs later and add a MP10 or Tunze to that area for frags.

I just noticed rapidled has a new dimmable driver with built in pot. Nice features:

Current Range: 0-700mA
9-36VDC Voltage (runs ~3-10 LEDs)

I have one, its just made out of egg crate. I had a koralia 1 in that section for flow. I used to use an extra sunpaq 150 MH pendant. Now i just use my spare marineland set up. Not much going on in there at the moment though since my tank is fairly new and empty with the new setup. I have a ball of cheato under the rack which doubles as a fuge. Ran it on reverse light cycle as well.

I had one in my sump and the only problemm I had was the growth of coraline algae all over the sump and skimmer itself. The problem with that is that it created turbulance inside the skimmer which afffected performance. How much I dont know......

I have a 120g DT with a 40b sump. I am in the process of acquiring another 120w Chinese LED unit for my 'refugium' portion of the 40b (which is rather large) and turning it into a frag growing area. I had a similar concern with adding that strong of a light source to the sump area. Would algae growth in other parts of the sump----most notably, the skimmer and return have an effect on their performance. I am thinking of adding blacked out acrylic to block some (of course, not all of the light) to try to restrict the light the frag area.

anyone have any issues with algae growth from strong sump lights? or any other issues?

pics of working systems would be great

I got rid of my small tank next to the sump. Not happy with it. I sent it off on a moped. If I had a larger sump I would put in a frag tank section and light it with LEDs. Yes coralline growth must be dealt with but I am not sure it's a problem. Don't we run lights for chaeto in the sump already? detritus can also build up. So yes to power head and manual cleaning.

I am thinking about putting the rack in the section all the way to the right, where the return pump sucks from.

Im not concerned that there will be a lack of flow. More concerned there will be to much due to the super dart gold reeflo. I expect a pump capable of 4300 GPH is running at 2500GPH after all my plumbing.

I have a refugium in the middle and recently had to add another reflector on the bulb due to coraline in my skimmer. On top of that I hung some tin foil (i know...ghetto) on the center brace also to keep light out of left side of sump. My glass baffles I bought are tinted, so it cuts some of the light too.

Ok here is the thing. the section is 7" x 18", and the frags will be maybe 7-8" deep.

Im thinking about getting about six-eight, 3 watt LEDs. Just one small strip. I dont know if it will be enough? I guess I can always lift the rack higher in the water.

thinking 6 royal blues and 2 neutral whites.

Any thoughts?

On serious note. You can run a couple more LEDs on the same driver. So why only 5-6? Also you need protection if a frag or coral piece falls so that it does not get sucked into pump causing damage. Make sure rack is easy to remove for cleaning purposes. Your flow is fine
