Surface skimming box

So I have a cpr hang on refugium with the surface skimming box. Well my fish keeps ending up in the box over night. I'm looking for suggestions on what I can put on the top of the box to keep the fish from getting sucked in. I know it comes with the little sponge but I would prefer not to use it. Any ideas or has someone had this problem and found a solution. Thanks Kevin.

egg crate light diffusers are one commonly used item
They can be acquired at your local home improvement store and easily cut (cracked really) as needed...
Zip ties can be used to secure it through a couple drilled holes..
