White slime in Tank

Everytime I have to move my tank , it seems as though I get a slime outbreak. I hate to say it, but it appears as though snot is taking over my tank. I feel it has something to do with th live rock sheding, but I'm not sure. The slime is a clear to whitish in color, and it looks and feels like snot. Does any one have any idea of what this might be or how to get rid of it???

rottface, I have the same problem in a four year old tank and never have seen it before. It looks and feels just like snot. It is so gross. I hope someone who knows will answer.

kellierick, I have two ideas of what it maybe, but I'm not positive about either. One maybe be that it something bacterial related. Another maybe be that it is some kind of shedding of the rock. It could totally be another problem be these were ideas I had. Do you have any thoughts on what may have triggered you problem?

It has been so hot and humid here that I wondered if it was heat. My fish and corals are fine. It went away for a couple of days after two water changes, but last night it was back. Do you run carbon?

Yes, I run about 1/2 a cup of carbon and change it about every three weeks to a month. The first two times I had it didn't effect my fish or corals, this time some of my corals seem to be STN'ing but I think that was related to a problem I had that was related to low alk, and unstable pH, which I have resolved.

rottface, thought I would check in with you. I was rid of the slime for almost two weeks. Came back this weekend. Have you gotten rid of it?

nope... no chance of getting rid of it, and no clue how either. I have also tried figuring out what it is and have had no luck. I have tried many thing to get rid of it. I cut back lighting by an hour, run carbon, syphon out it and detritus, water changes. What have you tried?

Exact same thing as you, water changes, poly filters, replacing carbon, shortening lighting, less feeding. My last water change, the slime was so thick that it had clogged my media tray. I was so grossed out I wore gloves. A friend of mine has it as well and he is convinced it is due to the heat, but in three summers it has never happened before.

I'm not either...I use to, but the first time I had this problem I thought that might be it, but now I have not been using for at least 6 months. I do top off with kalkwasser though.

Could it be snail eggs? That's what mine ended up being (cerith eggs).

I don't have any cerith snails in my tank. At least not that I'm aware of. I think I would have seen them if I did have them.

kelliericj, have you had any luck? It seems to get worse for me a day or two after I do a water change. I try to syphon out as much of it as I possible can. I was thinking though that if it is bacterial in nature, if running a UV sterlizer would help kill it off??? Anyone have any thoughts?

I had the same issues over the past couple months, I got advice to check my silicates and phosphates with a good test kit. I found that my silicates were a little high at 3ppm as were my phosphates (detectable). I found the source of my silicates was the RODI water I was buying. I set up my own RODI that has a 0tds and my problem has slowly went away. It was not overnight, but did finally happen.

Don't try to use cheap test kits for your testing, it will only frustrate you.

Mine has been gone for a few weeks now. I just did weekly water changes, cleaned my polyfilters every other day and changed carbon once per week (I used to do it once per month). I also cut down my MH to six hours per day. Sure hope it stays away. That is some nasty stuff.
