I just bought one from brs. 150gpd. You have a 55 so maybe a 75gpd. Not much to it make sure you get a meter to measure water quality. Will help out once you need to changer filters

I would stick with the "proven" companies around here..
Buckeye Hydro, Airwaterice, spectrapure, bulkreefsupply..

I love my airwateice typhoon setup but I've customized it some too..
buckeye hydro has amazing customer service from what I understand and frequents this forum often.. spectrapure has nice refurbished units at a lesser cost.. bulkreefsupply has good units with nice included options..

Expect $150-200 for a decent setup..
Somethings that are nice to have are
#1-ASOV valve if you intend on leaving the water supply to it on all the time..
#2-Dual or triple inline TDS meter
#3-vertical DI canister (avoid smaller horizontals)
#4-Pressure gauge.. (A must IMO)

You will want to check to see if your local water source uses Chloramines or just Chlorine to treat the water as Chloramines are tougher to remove from the water and require a bit of an upgrade in the carbon filter..

I think for you I would recommend giving Russ a call at Buckeye Hydro and telling him what you want.. He seems to be very helpful and will walk you through EXACTLY what you need..

Thanks for all the information. We have great water here. Just chlorine. I think our water is rated one of the top in the nation. That is a great list of what to look for.

I just hot a koolermax ar122 six stage for about $150 and it works great. Good quality parts and everything you need is included to hook it up to any water source.

Same here. We have 27ppm on average and my DI last years and membranes are over a decade old.

Get a 5 stage with DI and enjoy, if you want faster production get 2 membranes and save water.

I see no reason for more than a 25gpd membrane.

For sure get a DI stage.

I just run mine to a float valve I drilled into the side of a 32 gallon brute trashcan in wheels.

When I do water changes I actually mix the salt in that can and roll it over to the tank

With a 25GPD membrane it's full by the next day

If you're buying quality membranes anyways, there isn't really a significant difference in price between different flow rates. The Dow filmtec 75 gpd membrane (BW60-1812-75) is the most popular in the hobby because it has a decent flow rate, isn't unusually expensive, and has a very good reject ratio. It's $25 on Amazon. Dow makes 100 gpd units but the reject ratio is worse, the 75 gpd is the sweet spot in the product line.

When I was looking for one, I searched online and came up with what I thought was what I would need for it to do what I wanted. While I own a BRS unit, After reading these forums and seeing responses by buckeyehydro in EVERY ro/di thread, my vote would most definitely be them.

And in Rochester, I wouldn't be surprised if they used chloramines. Even if they are currently not using it, they probably do at some point in the year to flush out the pipes. Before buying anything, I would be finding this out first. A quick call to the local water authority, or a water quality report should be able to tell you.

Yes, Monroe County uses chlorine. I checked before I set up the tank. Although this is my first reef, I have probably had about 20 tanks over my life, even one fish only salt. I knew to check that. We are lucky! My pond fish do great and even breed with completely untreated water from the hose, although we do have a UV filter for them to keep the water clear.

I will call buckeye. My husband is excited I am getting him a RO unit for Christmas! I have the best husband!

Bulk reef supply has some great set ups, and great customer service it would be worth calling them for a recommendation.

One of the downsides of the inline tds meters is that they are factory calibrated with running water. You probably don't have the wherewithal to do that. So.. you can calibrate it once a week if you'd like, but I've found that most people don't calibrate them unless they start getting odd readings. The DM1 only has one calibration pot for both probes. The TRM-1 also has one pot. On the DM2 the probes can be calibrated independently.
