legalities of collecting and shipping corals?

i own a hefty chunk of land in cebu, philippines. as you may or may not know, this is where all of the reefs are in the philippines. i was thinking about starting an aquaculture center and then shipping the corals here to america. does anyone know the legalities of this?

what type of permits would i need to collect the corals? and what would i need to be able to import them to america?

Best thing to do is to check with both governments and find out the requirements. Get what you need strait from the horse's mouth.

as far as harvesting and importing to US, you will need a CITES permit, and export quota.

maybe your best bet would be partnering with an existing network/business,

I will confirm what ALTI stated.

No corals, but 'nems, echinoderms, snails, crabs and shrimp are OK to export.

If i were you I wouldnt take advice from anyone on here with that issue. Talk to the government and undoubtedly get yourself a lawyer that knows how to interpret the law. Go talk to someone already in the business in your area(dont tell him ur thinking about competing!!LOL)

You nead a quarteen center in America to recieve the corals and have to keep them for around 4 weeks.

Having been an importer, and our company having such good relations with BFAR, I can 100% confirm what Tyler says, but to add you can ship mushrooms w/ out rock. Coral harvesting, aquacultured or not, has been illegal in PI for nearly 2 decades. It will take act of their senate to pass a bill allowing it. BFAR can't issue any permits for coral export until that happens.

If you don't belive me, simply contact BFAR yourself.

That's news to us Americans? Is this a law NZ passed for us, with out our knowledge Sorry, you don't have to have any facility in the states in order to import corals, nor do you have to quarantine them for any period of time. There's a factor in the MOI called "transshipping". Transhippers are importers, typically with now facility of their own, but they are the importer of record for that MO.
