Sponge filters in the jbj 28 gallon nano
do I really need the sponge filters in the 1 and 5 slots of my jbj 28 gallon nanocube? I am talking about the ones that are about 1/4" x 2.5" x 8" long and sit in the side chambers by the pumps. They don't really seem to catch anything and I am afraid they are just becoming nitrate factory's for me. P.S iam battling high nitrates, 6-8ppm. I currently have a skimmer in the number 3 spot so I don't have the factory basket.

I have a media backer in chamber 1. I’ll put filter floss or charcoal in there for 24 hours if I’m stirring up a lot of detritus(bare bottom tank) and skimmer is in chamber 5. I wouldn’t leave any mechanical filtration in long term.

I have the same exact tank as you. Honestly I removed mine at least 4 years ago. Less stuff to have to worry about cleaning or changing out
