Can I rig a sump up to my biocube this way?

Ok, so I have a 10g tank I'd like to turn into a sump/fuge for my 29g macro tank. I want to increase the water volume, and I also want to keep a meanie crab in there.
The way a Biocube filter works is fairly simple. You have three compartments in the back. The far left one holds a pump that puts water back into the tank, the far right one has slots so water can flow into the filtration system, and the middle compartment has a short wall between it and the right one so that water can flow into the middle. There's also a hole in the wall between the left and the middle compartments.
The middle compartment is fairly large and has nothing useful in it. I was thinking I could stick a hose in there so that it goes down into the 10g. I'd also put a pump in the 10g with a same-sized hose leading up to the filter outlet in the left compartment.
The 10g would have a pile of live rock rubble in it, plus some rock for extra biological filtration. I'd probably keep some kind of crab in there... maybe I'd ask my LFS if they've gotten any hitchhikers.

However you rig it you need to take into account what will happen if the return pump in the sump fails (power fail) and the hose syphons the biocube into the sump.
