Skimmer tests? Scientific, that is.
Just about everyday on this site or others, someone asks which skimmer is best.
Has anyone or any group ever put the most popular skimmers on the market through a battery of tests on the the water they are skimming? I don't mean the ususal visual test like, "man, this thing pulls some really dark yukky smelling gunk!" I am talking about an actual scientific test. |

Nope. There's been quite a bit of discussion about it lately (check the advanced forum) but no such quantitative test exists. Setting up proper testing would most likely be expensive and there is not really any incentive for manufactures to conduct them. They make more money by simple marketing. It would take a dedicated hobbyist with very deep pockets and perhaps access to research grade equipment.
So for now, user reviews is unfortunately all we have. FB

i did a mini experiment with skimmer sludge testing protein concentrations. nothing exact. i also tested their water quality as well and the protein concentrations in that. very unscientific because of so many variables. food, fish, size, flow, skimmer, fuge, carbon, ect.....
