Hey everyone. I just got my new SM 250 and was wondering how one might clean the air riser tube? I see that they don't disassemble like the deluxe models and was thinking couldn't we just syringe some RO water down the top and it will clean out the crud that accumulates over time cause this thing is sucking 2400liters/air/hour!!!

Thanks!
Nate

Those mufflers have sponge in them, so you don't want to do that. They will come apart, just take a razor blade and run it along the seam of the cap. Work it all the way around and you will be able to get it apart.

ok thanks Jeremy. What does royal exclusive expect us to do if they didn't build them to come apart? Design flaw on their part?

thanks again,
Nate

They are designed to come apart, just like the Alpha's where you need to run a blade in the seam since it's such a tight fit. This takes away the need for a screw, etc. Just run a razor blade in that seam and work it loose, and you'll be good to go. They are not glued together, but press fit.

All, I'm in the market for a new skimmer and I'm leaning towards a BK. My display is 112g and I have a 30g sump on the tank. My total water volume is right at 100g. I've been researching the BK's and it seems like I would want want of the 3 models listed below.
Can anyone tell me the major differences between these 3 skimmers and share their opinions on which one is the best unit?

Bubble King 180 Cone Skimmer
Bubble King Supermarin 200 Protein Skimmer
Bubble King Mini 180 Gen 2 Protein Skimmer

I would suggest going with the Mini 180. It will be more than enough to handle your system and have a very small footprint in the sump. On top of that, it has the best collection cup design of any skimmer ever made in my opinion, which makes it an absolute breeze to dump and clean the cup.

Mini 160, Mini 180, and Mini 200 skimmers all have the exact same collection cup design.

Jeremy

If I put an air line on the Mini 160 ozone intake would that boost my skimmate?

cheers

No it would not because the venturi line is not restricting at all due to the size of it. If the venturi line was the size of the ozone line, then you opened up the larger ozone line, then yes. So in other words, the skimmer will draw the same amount of air whether you use both lines, or the single venturi line.

The Gen 1 has a stock volute that's been bored out for a larger water draw and custom venturi with a short pin impeller. The Gen 2 went to a long pin impeller that forced them to build a custom volute with custom venturi. The Gen 1 180 and 200 and not able to be upgraded to a Gen 2.

Jeremy, Thanks for the info. What is the optimal water depth for a BK Mini 180 Gen 2? The skimmer compartment on my sump keeps the water at 8 inches. I thought I read somewhere that the optimal level was about 6 inches.

Hi urbaneks,
6 inches sounds bit low.
Ideal would be 8-9 inches.
I have mine at about 9 and boy it does a great job.
Some pics for reference....

You could run it at 6" and it will still work fine, although it will work better in that 7.5" - 8.5" range.

What is the red insert I see in some of the 180 Gen2 images in the venturi?

Just part of the internal venturi, and actually creates the air draw. It's more self explanitory if you look at it from the back side while it's removed from the body. HTH!

Are all mini 180 gen2 supposed to have it? The manual doesn't refer to it on minis.

I was wondering what the difference in the SM 250 from a few years ago, and the one with the new RDII pump? Is there a difference in performance?

I have my mini 180 gen2 in about 7.5 inches of water. I have the stripline at the mark and getting a good foam, but I want to skim alittle wetter. How much above the line can I go?

Also, if I can get the foam to the stripline is there any advantage or benefit to increase the water depth the skimmer is in?
