Convict Tang School - Share your experience
Hello all,
I am planning and starting to build my 250g system and I am thinking of putting a school of 5 ... maybe 7 Convict tangs as I simply love this ones. Does anyone have the experience that can share with some pictures? My concern is if they will move together or on the other-side scatter around the aquarium! All the best, Rui |

I really like convict tangs and had no idea you could get a small school of them. I'm interested in an answer as well.

The longer and bigger the tank for schools of tangs regardless of what species the better. I have seen 7 yellow tangs in a 300g, which I thought was much too small for them but people do it. A lot will have to do with other tank inhabitants

The only time I've seen them school was in Hawaii. But they can be found from pairs to large schools of hundreds if not thousands picking algae all day.

They might cohabitate in that size tank but it's very unlikely that they would actually school.

I saw film taken on a reef. There were a pair of Powder Blue Tangs guarding an area of a reef that had algae on it. A school of convict tangs descended upon them. The Powder Blues chased and chased, but there were too many Convicts. The convicts ate all the algae and then moved on. The Powder Blues looked so sad.

Thanks for all your replies.
7 might be to much but at least 5 of them Yellow tangs grow more than the convicts and are more aggressive too. The tank will me 2 meters by 75cm by 60cm for a total of 265 gallons. There will be only one more Surgeon fish (lieutenant) to command the troops and that's all. I will try to look the referred aquarium here ... All the best, Rui |

In my 220g i put 2 small convict few weeks ago. They started to fight but now they just don't care about them. One in each side of the tank. Powder blue and yellow tang ignores them but i don't know if it will last for long time as they are really small ...but if you have space and start with small fish maybe you can have a school behaviour

Always see them schooling while diving. Actually right now, there are THOUSANDS of babies all over the place in schools of maybe 30+ or so. All about the size of a quarter.
