What is this?

Found these two strange white growths when cleaning out the back of my red sea max tonight. It almost looked like some sort of tube/colony for a worm of some sort, any ideas?

It's either sponge...

...or Sauerkraut.

I would pass on the taste test, and safely assume sponge.
