Amateur Hour

It's difficult to believe how idiotic a decision can seem in retrospect when at first it seemed reasonable.
I chanced across a pyramid butterfly at one of our LFS a couple of months ago. One of those outings where you weren't expecting to buy anything but something that you've always wanted just shows up (not to mention eating and looking chipper). And so of course you buy it.
This fish has a reputation for being fragile. It's hard to come by. It looked healthy. I was busy and really didn't want to bother with TT and QT. So I decided to just put it into the display. I never ever do that. But I thought this one time it'll probably be ok and a fish like this has a best chance of making it this way. You can guess what happened.
It was dead 4 days later.
2 weeks later so were my prized emperor, my beloved parrot, anthias, fiji puffer and royal grammas. All of whom Ive had for years. Brooklynella, I think, but Im not totally sure as oddly my clowns made it through mostly unscathed (one fought off a mild to moderate case).
I write this as a pathetic testament to a deadly combination of overconfidence, lassitude, and wishful thinking. QUARANTINE. No matter what.

That sucks. When you're experiencing success, it's easy to get complacent and ignore/forget the basics. Ask me how I know......

Re-reading that post, it is a bummer. Sorry!
On a happier note I think that pestilence has run its course. Am going to make some new additions next week.

Thx G. I guess I reluctantly admit I'm human.

Am so used to having a large angel around, tank just doesn't look right to me without one. Might get another. Have never had a blue face... but not entirely sure it would go after my softies.

I just kept 15 long running. Not a sterile quarantine tank. Some rock ,some sand . Everything is expendable. Couple bucks invested. T5 lights , cheap led would work. Poop comes home , I'm good to go . Even if i just observe fish/ coral. It's easy. Saved me more than once. Stupid walmart hang on the back filter. I had mine in my son's room. Toss in a firefish if you want . Handful of medications on hand. Heaters break , pumps quit , fish fight . Whatever. Itl' s nice having a backup tank established. I'm going to set it back up before this year is over.
