Chaeto in sump

I’ve been trying to research what is going on with my chaeto algae but haven’t found anything that really shows what I have.

What are the long vines? They’re growth right? I bought one small clump from a lfs and the rest from someone I found online. They didn’t come with the vines so I’m naturally assuming it’s growth..

Those vines aren't Chaeto growth, they look like some type of caulerpa perhaps...maybe someone else knows exactly what it is.

Looking into that, yah I think it’s grape caulerpa, which I’ve read is ok for my sump, right? It won’t seed into my DT will it?

It can, hopefully not. If it was me I’d
Ditch all of it and get a new ball of cheato from a local member

Yep.. I'd get rid of all the Caulerpa..
Looks like you can grab a small piece of Chaeto and ditch the rest..

Caluerpa. It made it’s way into my display years ago, once it gets a foothold it is near impossible to remove. It grows long runners that will root into the rock wherever it touches. I would get rid of everything it it were me, I’ll never take a chance with that stuff again.

Ok I’m going to get all new chaeto this weekend but how do I get my copepods and critters out of my current stuff?? I’ve been working so hard to build up my population and they’re all in there.

I'd do that. When you remove the pile, shake it over the fuge.

It's Caulerpa, Not a bad algae unless it goes sexual. But as said above it attaches to everything.

Update and I would like opinions.

I didn’t want to risk losing all my copepods in the chaeto I already had so I picked out all the caulerpa I could find last Friday. And I mean went through it very well grabbed everything grab-able and then I did a few small pieces a few days ago and I haven’t seen any since. But when I do, I’ll just keep picking it out.

I’m assuming some might tell me it’s useless but so far, so good. And I haven’t had to risk any of my copepods or mysis that live in my sump.

I was told caulerpa won’t go sexual with 24/7 light, is that true? I’ve also heard it can be bad for chaeto as it needs a break from light.

I can't help you with the caulerpa.

My chaeto has done just fine with 24/7 light. I've had the same ball for years, and I continually have to prune it down.

Your pod population would replenish very quickly and shouldn’t affect your decision too much.
