I have read your posts and I know how you seem to prefer the more natural look when it comes to lighting. I have always used ATi Bulbs and recently with the Korallen-Zucht 25% off sale, bought some KZ Coral Light II New Generation bulbs. They are a really crisp looking bulb that really complements any color combo. I would guess it's about a 14K spectrum, but it just has a look that I haven't found with any other bulb like it. I had heard many people praise the bulbs in the past and I can say that everything they've said is true. I used a single 36" KZ CL II NG bulb as a supplement to my Radions on my 48" 80g. Below is a picture. Figured I'd share my experience with these awesome bulbs!

So we have a problem, Houston. The algae is back in full force. And it's growing everywhere including on the return nozzles. I have no idea why it's there, what it causing it or even what type it is. It's like long stringy snot. I would argue that the longest piece is 6 inches or so. I have done constant water changes, under fed, skimmed wet and of course always use 0 TDS RODI water.

It very well could be after I found this. Our algae looks very similar to this only not as green.

I have been wanting to upgrade to MP60's for a while now and this is probably a good excuse. I get a lot of this algae on my sand bed lately so perhaps flow is to blame. I also need to get an ATS but I don't have any desire to build so probably need to buy one.

I talked with Morgan at ATS scrubber. He suggests a model 300 for my tank. With LED's that would put me at $1200. Which is near what two new MP60's would cost me. So my question is which would RC put on their tank first? I already have two MP40's but perhaps they aren't creating enough flow. I noticed this algae is growing heavily on the sand bed right below them.

That looks like Dino's to me, Brandon.
Randy suggests trying to raise your pH.

Not so sure it would help much with the dinos but I do think your tank needs more flow. A cheaper way to see how it responds would be to pick up some jaebo powerheads. Ugly but powerful. If you like how the tank responds you can always sell them off and get mp40's later.

I agree, that looks like dinos. My condolences...

At least your corals don't seem bothered by the dinos! There are some that will all but kill your SPS and such. When you do add your pumps, try wrapping the tank so it's pitch black inside for a couple days. That will shock the dinos in the tank, and maybe with the flow you'll get an upper hand.

Good luck!!!

Sorry that is no algae. I would hold off on buying anything for now.

Yes. Thanks, Jesse

I will try and look through it this weekend but usually a 96 page thread on solving a problem is compiled of constant bickering with no real results.

The problem is that there are many many different kinds of dinos, and it seems that depending on what specific type you have the "cure" is different... and add to that the part about it being almost impossible to really tell what type you have without a lab and there are lots of different theories on what to do.

All the different theories I've heard that I can remember...

- Raise PH and hope your type don't like it
- Induce a bacterial bloom in your tank to out compete them (dangerous!)
- Get rid of light for a couple days (but they'll usually come back)
- Mechanical removal coupled with more flow

Very much what I expected from the thread. I would imagine that adding more flow and an ATS would greatly benefit my tank regardless. I was really just trying to determine which would be more beneficial to start with.

And yes, I plan on doing manual removal over the break this week and then a water change before a complete blackout.

Raise magnesium with Kent tech M, dose bacteria, and let it run its course

Do you have access to a microscope? Identifying it should be your first step. Should not be treated as algae

I can find someone with one. I did a lights out trial for 2.5 days without trash bags and much of it is gone. I also went ahead and ordered two MP60 quiet drives. I know I need more flow in the tank regardless so that is a good place to start. I still may add an ATS. Is it true that you don't need a skimmer with a really nice and efficient ATS?

Maybe wait to add an ATS until you see if you will need a more extensive lights out period to rid yourself of the Dinos. I had a Dino outbreak and it took a 5-day TOTAL blackout, and several more days of short lighting periods to get rid of them.

I've done a lot of reading and fully intend to add an ATS to my system when Floyd tells me his next gen setups are ready to buy but I do not believe that I would ever go skimmerless, even with a thriving ATS.

My new MP60 quiet drives powerheads arrived at the LFS today. Looking forward to picking them up and getting them mounted in the tank!!!!

I like the wood surrounding the tank, it gives it a more marine, boat type of feel.
