Killing fish for no reason
I am just wondering if everyone feels the same way I do about this. Me and my wife are in surfside beach (which is close to Galveston tx) for a couple days and we walked down Where everyone is fishing as we are walking out there a guy catches a black tip reef shark small about 2 ft he then proceeds to cut its tail off and throw it on the walkway so everyone can see after it lays there for a little wile about 5 min or so he throws it back in the water I don't say anything and keep walking a few min later another guy catches one right as we are walking up I try to stop him telling him I have a home aquarium that I would like to put him in and offer to buy him from the guy he laughs and proceeds to cut off his tail and says how much will u give me as he is laughing however this guy does actually keep this one said he going to eat it but the first guy tried to talk him into throwing him back in the water like he had done I was really just going to let him go he wouldn't b happy in my tank just trying to save one on a brighter note we did see about a 3 foot one swimming just off the rocks about 5 feet

Unfortunately many people abuse or kill animals for fun/sport.
I will refrain from posting what I think of them. I will just say that my opinion of such people is extremely negative.

I think what bothers me the most (not that I condone any of it) is why throw them back alive with no chance of survival mutilated in that way. Why make them suffer?

Sounds like those people are sick in the head and knowing me I would have called the game wardon on them and take pictures of them if possible to show to the game wardon.

I wonder if the fisherman in that area consider them pests that steal their bait?

It is against the law to do what they were doing please if you see this happening again at Surfside Beach or Pier this is the number you need to contact or the closest lifeguard to contact the proper authroities. Pier Outfitters Phone Number is (843) 238-0121. If it is on the beach, find the closest lifeguard and ask them to call beach services.

I'm glad it's illegal. I would have been tempted to ask him if he wanted to know what that felt like, but that's just me. Should he be filmed doing it? When the police arrive, wouldn't they need proof?

I would think so. At least get pictures of them doing what they are doing are film it if you can get it fast enough before the person realizes what you are doing.

Not sure what the law is in TX, but when we caught black tips in Georgia I'm pretty sure the minimum was 4'. Most were in the 2' range and the coolest part was putting them back and watching the way they swam away. BIG fine if you took one under limits.

I don't think that is what they were doing with it because they just cut the tail and left it laying in the sun

Yes, shark fin soup is served in the us all the time. My family used to order it all the time. I've had it before. I never liked it that much, the shark fins are turned into a stringy noodle. It's completely flavorless. There is legislation in California to ban the sale of it soon(the soup). I fully support it. Its a ridiculous soup. I've convinced my family to not order it any more too.
