Recommend Submersible Pump
Hey Fellas,
Can somebody recommend a submersible pump that is quiet, isn't going to cook my water, relatively small, and most importantly-reliable. I was contemplating the eheim 1250 but I think I am going to need more flow. The 1260 is too big to fit in my sump's pump compartment. Also, I am in the process of replacing my Octopus 110NW skimmer pump with a gen-x 1500NW pump. I found one decently priced at marineandreef.com. Is this company good to deal with? Tango Mike, G |

If you are looking at the 1250 for your 37 cube, it is more than enough flow. In fact, all you need is 1.5 tank turnovers per hour just enough to keep the surface of the display clear of the white scum (surface active proteins) which inhibits gas exchange.

I was contemplating attaching a Hydor Flo to the return. Hence, the reason I feel like I need abit more flow to make up for the flow loss associated with this attachment.

How many feet of static head is the return pump working against? What diameter piping are you using for the return line?

I had planned on 3/4" plumbing for the return and roughly 3.5 feet of vertical plumbing (not counting the horizontal component).
Thanks!! |

The 1250 still gives you WAY more flow than you need. The Hydor Flo is essentially just an extra 90 degree elbow.

I like the Mag pumps. They are small, ultra dependable and cheap. There only down fall is heat. If you size it correctly that shouldn't be a problem. R

Using the head loss calculator example listed above the 1250 output at 3.5' drops from 315 GPH to 208. The Mag 3 drops from 365 to 258. The 1250 costs $70 and uses 28 watts. The Mag costs $40 and uses 35 watts. I have used Mags externally dangling from hoses, thrown in the bottom of salt mixing tanks and have drooped them on the floor. The Ehiem pumps are too expensive, too large and have metric fittings. R |

My comments/exp is more toward the Eheim 1260/1262 pumps. I've never had a 1250 and dont have any personal exp with them.
I've owned Mag3/5/7/9.5. I still have a Mag3 used for mixing and a mag7 that is sitting in a box since it is so loud, I have no real use for it. Do a search on loud Mag7, very common complaint. An Eheim 1260 has a ton more flow in real world over a Mag7 and is MUCH quieter. Same when comparing a 1262 to a Mag9, No comparison in flow. The headloss calc on this site is not accurate. Someone did a test recently with a Mag9 and a 1262 @ 4' head. The 9.5 had ~ 500 GPH flow, the 1262 had ~ 800 GPH. People are switching to Eheim on their Aqua-C EV skimmer and seeing tremendous improvements over Mags due to the superior head performance. I'm not saying a Mag is a bad pump. They are small, inexpensive, but are not Eheims. The small ones like the Mag3/5s are good pumps. The Mag7 is just too noisy. Once you get to Mag9.5+, you need to use 1.5" plumbing to get the flow from them with is a PITA to work with.
