My equipment list so far.

Heater
Looking at the Rapid led Diy kit 6w 6rb with 2 drivers.
Haven't decide on a skimmer yet. Will be doing weekly WC

Haven't decided on bare bottom or sand bed.
Vortech's for flow
Have Rodi system

Please look over my list. Tell me if I am screwing up somewhere.

i seen a shelf set up kinda like your idea, and the person took like a 3inch pvc and cut it in half like half a circle then cut grooves in it and glued it in like an over flow in one of the corners he stuc the ac 70 return in there and it looked wonderfull plus he was sucking off the surface, wich i find to be one of the biggest cons to not having a sump. if i would have seen this befor i set my 20 up i would have done the same.

also theres alot of info on dsb vs bare bottom if you search it will come down to your preference, my motto you can always add it or suck it out.

looking foward to seeing this go up !!!!!

I was thinking about doing a overflow box like your talking about. I will probably go with sand. I'm only going to have 2-3 fish. so bio load shouldn't be to bad.

I will look at thread. Need some more ideas!
