Putting pump back together

I took my rd3 speedy 50 watt apart for cleaning and while putting it back together I notice a space between the red face plate and the pump block. Is this normal? Never paid attention to it before. I've taken it apart and put it back together 3 more times and this is as tight as I can get it.
