He is on the thin side but the good thing is his belly looks nice and full As long as he is eating keep him well fed and he will start to bulk up, just takes some time. If you can get him eating pellets that would help a lot as well.
Good luck! |

I received 2 idols from a wholesaler last week. One came in with a buoyancy issue and didnt make it past the first day. the other one was eating by the second day. it was funny watching it eat the new food for the first time. He would take a bite of food and shake his head back and forth like he was saying YUCK. Eating brine, mysis, and krill so far. Not much going for nori yet.

I think parasites would be visible and also cause the idol not to eat. my 2 cents.... |

I agree with pfan. Treat it for internal parasites. If it is eating well and not putting on weight by now it sounds like intestinal worms are getting well fed. Treat with MetroPlex. before it loses it's appetite from malnutrition.

Thanks for the info. I treated with Prazi Pro when I first got him. He eats pellets well. I have some flake that has dewormer in it, will feed some of that. He has a good size belly on him, so I wasn’t overly worried until now

All three of my Idols died. They did OK for a while but never great.
Since then, I got another Idol who is doing very well. It eats pellets and is very curious and active, just like the one I had for 8 years. I think this one will last a long time. I think cyanide is still a big problem in the industry, and when I get a fish that seems healthy and is eating, but then stops eating and slowly wastes away with no other sign of disease, I attribute it to probable cyanide. I think that was what happened to the previous 3.

Does it make a difference where the fish was collected from? The wholesaler I have access to is getting his idols from Hawaii? I saw an online seller stating his were from overseas (can’t remember where). A local store almost always has them but they always look faded out with not much coloration.
Thanks Jeff |

I thought Hawaii was shut down.
The advantage of Hawaii is that they do not use cyanide, so have a better chance of survival.

That's too bad about the pair (trio) not making it. I had one for about a year hand caught from Hawaii that was doing great, then all of a sudden died out of the blue, literally like 20 minutes after vigorously eating. Was perfectly normal one minute, then dead the next minute.
I bought two (non-Hawaiian) MIs from a LFS with faded colors but were very actively picking at the sand and rocks. They were in the same tank and seemed to get along. Wanted to try to pair them up, but after 1 day in QT together, one started attacking the other. I separated them and QT'd each separately, thinking maybe it was due to the smaller space in QT. Their colors improved tremendously during QT. I tried pairing them again in the DT, and same thing. For 1 day they got along. Then after 1 day, the same MI started attacking the other one. Decided not to press it and separated them. |

I finally got an order in to wholesaler for 3 MI's. Day of arrival one just didnt act right when I had them in an aerated bucket bringing their salinity down to hypo levels. Had its nose down most of the time and just not very active. The other two looked good. The two were eating some frozen mix of mine by the end of the first day. The third fish died after about 4-5 days. One of them currently has gas bubble disease and the air is trapped in and behind its eyes. Looks almost like popeye but you can see the trapped air bubble. I have treated with Epsom salts and seems to be somewhat better. Still eating great so I have hopes it will get through it and a month of qt. On day 9 now and both are eating like little pigs and very active.
