updated pony tank pix... and question about cyano and changing color of pony.

so i added some corals, i dont think i'll be adding anymore, maybe some GSP to get a nice green grassy look to the tank. but i noticed my horse's tail is changing color from its body color to a more pinkish red color... the horse is like a dull yellow/white.. mostly white. why's that? but anyways... enjoy pix.

oh, i also yesterday in BOTH my tanks i siphoned out almost all the cyano (or tried) and did a 6 gallon change on my 30 gal and a 4 gal change on the 12 gal aquapod. today, all the cyanos back.

under moonlights

horse, shrimp reflection and cyano

the likely first step needed for your cycano solution is better water flow (redirected to dead spots and/or more overall)... and then address the root cause which is excess/accumulating nutrients (more water changes needed, better skimming, etc.)

IME turning off your lights for 48 hours will kill the cyano. The bacteria is photosynthetic and cannot survive without a light source. I have done this on a few occasions and all of my corals have been just fine.

There are products on the market such as Chem Clean, that are made to kill cyano as well but IME once you use them it is a continual cycle. The attacks seem to come back stronger. It is my guess they only kill off the weaker cells leaving the strongest ones to reproduce, but that is just a guess.

You could also try putting filter agents such as phos ban in your cannister ( if you have one ), IME it has been very benifical to my system.

As far as finding the source of your problem, you could look at what you are dosing your tank with, are you fully rinsing your food, has the color spectrum of your lights changed, what's your clean up crew up to?

Just some places to start.

Good Luck,
