150g iwagumi tank thread

Figured I'd try to start and keep and a thread on my new tank,

It is hopefully going to be modeled after this incredible tank:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1909479

Specs of tank are:

156g oceanic glass tank (typlus' old tank)
5ft x 2ft x 2ft

75g sump
filter sock
euroreef 180
Via aqua carbon reactor
tlf150 biopellets reactor
jumbo sized refuge (2/3rds of the 75g tank)

pump is currently a mag24 but I would like to get something quieter (if you have something please let me know)

2 x 120w led panesls for lighting

1 x koralia 3
1 x jvp 101 (chinese version of K3)
Hoping to add a second jvp

Durso overflows for now

Current fish list:
Kole tang
Naso tang (temporarily)
royal gramma
yellow coris wrasse (want to add 1 or 2 more)
algae blenny (temporarily)
blue damsel
coral beauty

Leaving now, pics when I get back

Sounds like a sweet build. Whats your coral stocking plan? Also, you probably wont be able to successfully run a biopellet reactor with a refugium. You arent going to put that beautiful clown tang in there?

Coral stocking will be primarily sps with zoas and chalices around the bases of the rockwork

Sps will be similar to what the iwagumi reef has. Any idea the name on the more thick stemmed stubby acros that he has?

Yeah, not real sure about running both.. I can always take the tlf offline if I need to.. Right now its only running about 5-10% of the biopellets it can take (handful). Wanted to start small on the pellets and work my way up..

I suppose I could run gfo instead but I don't seem to have any phostpate problems..

As to the clown tang, I'm extremely sad to say he has died.

He "disapeared" in the evening 3 days before I switched tanks. Was in perfect health, ate like normal that morning, nothing abnormal was noted. No flashing, visiting the cleaner shrimp, etc.

No bones were found either

I will be getting a new one though!
I know i'll be pushing my luck but I really loved that fish..

The reason the naso is labeled temporary is because I'm waiting for the clown tang to come in, i'm hoping that by having a 7" naso in there when the new tang is introduced he wont' be as aggresive and will accept a lower place.

Eric,

The tank looks outstanding! It's amazing how much better the tank looks with so little rock. It's open which will give plenty of room for the fish to swim and corals to grow, and it looks quite close to the real thing . As far as scaping goes, don't touch a thing. Post some pics when you get the lights fully running. Keep up the awesome work!

It's a real honor for me to know that the philosophy of my tank extends elsewhere.
I should warn you about the fish that grammas, wrasses and damsel is not good companions for smaller gobies (trimmas, eviotas, etc).

Thank you for the inspiration and the advice!

The fish you mentioned can be removed if they show signs of aggression. I am having a very hard time finding trimmas and eviotas at my lfs right now and I didn't want the tank to look empty. I will be checking with a local importer soon to see if they carry them.

No tank yet but have the plans and equipment laid out. I keep lurking here to stay aquatinted with the hobby but have too much going on right now to get started. I think I'll be building a 180 acrylic custom to fit an in-wall application.

Hey Mangodude, was just curious how those led panels were working out for you. I was really impressed about the price : performance. Had a few questions if possible to help me plan my reef conversion.

How deep are you able to keep the sps and how high are the lights hanging above the tank?
Do you have any glass between the top of the water and the lights or is it open?
Do you think they would support a clam, and if so what depth?

Thanks!

Hey Whedbee, sps are doing good at 4 inches off the sand, lights are 4-5 inches off the water.. soo 2 ft?

its all open. I do have a middle section that has a 1/2" glass brace covering it (bout a foot wide?) and notice very little reduction in light penetration.

Clam would probably be fine in a 21" tank. i've never kept a clam so I can't say.. if you have a par meter you're welcome to come over and check the level if you want
