I was diving in Holguin Cuba in Feb and they were everywhere! Thought the first one I saw was cool, but then found out they are a huge problem! Saw them on a menu while in Cozumel last week.

I've collected several juveniles on the south shore of Long Island and in Rhode Island. They arrive around the time that most of the tropical strays show up in the fall. Winter cold will kill them off.

I've speared, filleted and then cooked them - can't get any less bycatch than that!

It's a white, flaky fish, and yes, it's quite delicious. You just need to harvest a fair amount of them before you can a full meal.

Cheers
Mike

Honestly, no one is worried about ciguatera? Is this not an issue in the Atlantic?

thats a good question. thats a big no no where i live at...dont anything off the reef. the locals are immune to it...cig can jack you up.

ive only seen lionfish at depths, not traditionally on the immediate reef.

It is an issue, with groupers, snappers, and other predatory reef fish as well. ciguatera does tend towards being somewhat reef specific, so it's not a major concern with fish that tend to be homebodies if one knows it's a good reef.

Immune to it? I didn't think anyone could develop an immunity to it... You sure about that? I've eaten fish off the reef for most of my life, but you should steer clear of predators...

Yeah Kaipo...ur right about immunity thing, but they sure do eat a heckova lot of reef fish.
maybe they're more knowledgeable about what to eat, not eat.

im too much of a wimp to even try. They kinda beat the fear into you here with horror stories.

ill stick to fresh caught Ohno, Yellowfins and dog tooths

Read some of the comments on that link. Just goes to show the ignorance of the majority.

What's sad is the current state of Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic reefs these days.

Yeah, they are stressed just as much as the Pacific reefs. Lionfish aren't helping the matter for the time being. There is proven documentation that the native species are starting to consume the lionfish so it's only a matter of time until there is a balance that is similar to the pacific.
I went to Sea Rovers in March and saw actual video of a frigate bird scooping one out of the water and eating it. Paul Cater Deaton made a documentary on it called "Lionfish, The Beautiful Outlaw" that is definitely worth watching. He also spoke of Groupers, sharks, lobsters , etc all eating them as well.
I speared a couple last month, chopped them up and fed them to the spiny lobsters. Showing potential predators that they are edible is having an effect on finst generation as well as second generations.

Yep, I hope we can mount a defense/offense against the pests in FL.

it is sad that all of these beautiful fish have to suffer, but whose to blame???....its the non- responsible aquarist that started releasing them in the wild down here.

My girlfriend wants a lionfish in her predator tank, they were charging $100 at the LFS, I almost choked on my drink hearing that. Im taking her to the keys to go find one.

Yes, a much better alternative! Perhaps while you are there you can collect a few extra ones and sell to your LFS for a profit

You don't even have to go as far as the Keys. I see them all the time in North Biscayne Bay and off the beach at Hollywood while doing beach dives.
