JBJ Nanocube 28 lighting options?
I haven’t had my tank running in many years. Trying to get back into hobby. What are my lighting options while keeping the lid on the tank? I think I have the original MH bulb in it which doesn’t have many hours on it. Less than a year maybe. Being out of the hobby so long I don’t know what everyone is using these days. Thanks!

JBJ Light options
Hello there,
I have had that model with 150 watt MH in the past but it created to much heat, so I moved that tank in the basement. You could get a chiller if the tank heats to much. With my current JBJ 28 i swapped out the CFL light with an led board - it keeps my tank temps much cooler and allows me to keep all types of corals. There are other LED options and I believe some kits are made specifically for this model tank. |

I don’t know if I’ll need to be worried about heat. It stays pretty cool in my basement where it’s going.

I’m kinda stuck with the hood cuz I have an almost 3 yr old heathen. No way I trust him with no kinda cover over tank.

I'm not sure what a Heathen is, but you can create a mesh top, or make one cut to size of the tank with acrylic. I cut a square piece of acrylic to fit on the inner ledge of my jbj. I then cut a 5x5 inch square in the center, just for gas exchange, convenience for feeding, and direct light penetration.

HA! Funny....But in all seriousness, you can get creative with a top. I just find it so much easier to throw an LED light over it. I love Kessil, but plenty of people throw other LEDs on there as well.

You have more option if not using the lid. I have the 29g Coral life and using a hydra52 inside the hood, and running it at around 28% at peak, I know it’s over kill but it’s what I have and it allows me to keep anything I want. I have 3 clowns, yellow watchmen goby, royal gramma, 2 gbta and 2 rbta and various corals.

I'm in the same boat, I just picked up a biocube 29 used for cheap. One of the ballast are bad, so I've been pondering what to do with lighting. My cat already has been sleeping on the lid, so I may want to keep the lid (he has fallen into my tanks before lol). Although I have a 27" Maxspect razor which has 3 led clusters from my past larger tanks. The LED retrofit kits are pricey IMO, another idea I thought about was trying to hook up small T5HOs since I have a few working ballast and connectors. I'm glad I kept all my reefing gear all these years!
