February 22, Meeting - Guest Speaker

Our February meeting will be February 22 at the Estero Community Center from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. . Note that this is the fourth Saturday of the month (as opposed to the third Saturday).

We will have a guest speaker:

Matthew Palmtag

Presentation: Selection, Care and Breeding of Marine Ornamental Fish

Matthew's Biography:
Matthew Palmtag dove into the aquarium hobby at seven years old. As a high school student he worked at the largest ornamental fish store in Wisconsin, if not the country; Aquatics Unlimited. He attended Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and earned a B.S. in Biology. During his studies he worked as a laboratory technician for world renown larval fish ecologist Dr. Joan Holt at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute Institute allowing him to work extensively with larval fire shrimp and publish his first publication: Captive Rearing of Fire Shrimp, Palmtag and Holt 2001.

He went on to attend graduate school at UTMSI as a student of Dr. Joan Holt, where together they published two journal articles on larval fire shrimp nutrition. During his tenure at the university under Dr. Holt, he accrued approximately eight years of experience spawning and raising fire shrimp as well as many marine ornamental fish such as jack knife fish, marine bettas, seahorses, hogfish, and many others . He went on to teach biology at the university level at Roger Williams University and assisted in managing their marine ornamental aquaculture laboratory.

He started a business in coastal North Carolina called Marine Ornamental Aquaculture that produced a variety of species which he sold to wholesale and retail outlets across the country. While he loved the production end of the business, he did not care for the other aspects and decided to sell the business and return to academia. He is a faculty member in the biological sciences department at Florida Gulf Coast University. As an instructor at FGCU his primary responsibilities are teaching introductory biology as well as an animal nutrition course. Due to his demanding teaching load at FGCU for the past five years he is not currently active in research.
