Shrooms, anyone?

After two years of having just fish in the tank, I decided to try out some softies. As it turns out, the only coral my fish leave alone are mushrooms. Fine with me, since I love the way they look. Here are some sort of okay shots of them (no macro lenses here).

And I'm glad you took the plunge to try a few softies.

I am, too. I was worried that the fish would take out everything, after seeing what they did to the zoas and acan, but they have not even looked at any of the mushrooms. They've all grown considerably since I moved them to that side of the tank and changed my light/flow, and I'm hoping that they start reproducing and spreading out.

You should get some jawbreaker/tie dye shrooms

I just looked those up... ouch. Don't think I'll ever be willing to spend that kind of money on mushrooms. I picked up a frag of two super bright orange actinodiscus today. Once they open up I'll grab a shot of them.

I'm using a Nikon D5200, and most of those shots were taken with my 16-85 f/3.5-5.6; I think one or two were taken with my 35mm 1.8.

I'm in the suburbs of Philly. The LFS I go to is actually pretty good. The owner sells a lot of frags (from $10-$40), and is always willing to frag larger rocks of coral. Whenever he gets new shrooms in, he saves a few for me without me asking. That's actually how I wound up with these new orange ones. I saw his new stock list on Facebook and when I called he already said he would hold some. Good thing, too, because somebody came in before me and wanted to buy the entire rock.

Nick, I'm doing an overhaul on my set-up sometime this year. I'll get your address and send a few out. You only have one that I have in mine.

Here's a shot of my newest orange shrooms. They're a little more dull right now than when I got them, but they're still in the process of acclimating to my much stronger LEDs. I'm hoping to pick up some more of these the next time he gets them in.

Thank you all.

The more I use this 16-85 lens, the more I love it. It's quite versatile.

I snapped some shots of my new Ricordea Floridas and Umbrella Mushroom today using a cheap tube kit. I have to get the lens right on the glass for it to focus properly, but I still think they turned out okay.

Some shots of my new Ricordea (first two), and better shots of some older shrooms (last two).
