I’ve been out of the hobby for two years and getting back in. I keep hearing about this and need to find out what it is so I can keep up with all the cool kids.

I'd ask this question in the general or advanced forums rather than large tanks. Probably will get more hits there. Also used the search
 People are using it, has well as similar additive methods, with success. Some have also stopped using it for various reasons.

Again, search is your friend. Here. Open search and type in "GlennF's 1500 liter mixed reef tank". It is in this sub forum, large tanks, and close enough to 500 gallons. 1500 liter is around 350 or so gallons
 Close enough.
