This is the wall that will be going down and built back after tank is in place. Love the sump. Wondering whether to put skimmer in first compartment or the refugium. Reason I ask is should I let the Copepoda and refugium residents eat first? If I do refugium first then won't I lose potential food into the skimmer prior to return? Maybe 2 refugiums? I have 4 compartments. I was thinking external reactors?

Definitely something to consider, especially the external reactors...but the sump is pretty large. For what it's worth, I like to put my skimmer section first because I think the copapods and micro critters will still have plenty to eat in the water column even after the skimmer has "cleaned" the water, especially if you're running mud and macroalgae. I'd rather it (refugium) be after the skimmer and reactors section(s) and just before the return to try and salvage as many critters as possible. Since you do have 4 sections, you probably can run skimmer, reactors, and two refugiums, one with live rock and the other with mud and algae.

Only other factor is keep in mind is total volume of sump...you still want to make sure there's plenty of water to supplement the main display of course, and not have too much equipment taking up precious water space.

Planning is half the phone of this hobby! Haha

Lmao! Meant "Fun"...not "phone"...unless we're talking about making new equipment orders.

I like the idea. Buying equipment is not fun for the wallet. LOL Picking out the parts is fun but paying...not so much LOL. The Vortech 60 is expensive. I think I should be fine with one on the opposite end of the Gyre with maybe a second Gyre on that side? What do you think?

I had a really similar dilemma when I was planning my system...and what Pedro and I finally came up with was sizing the return pump to be large enough to not need any internal pumps. I originally planned to have a pair of gyres mounted vertically on one end of the peninsula, or having a pair of MP60s on the far end and using the return to push back towards the overflow. What I ended up doing was getting a Reeflo Hammerhead for a return, and since it puts out 5500gph or so, with some properly angled return nozzles, we didn't need to add any internal power heads.

Now, that said, I was lucky enough to have a large external overflow, which was big enough to be able to fit two DC pumps each pushing 3500gph as a closed loop system. That really made the difference.

I know you ordered the gyre already, which I've heard is a great pump and low profile, so maybe size your return a bit larger so you won't need anything further...maybe add an oceans motion unit to randomize the return flow to different corners of the display. With that you should be good...of course depending on what you want to keep in there.

I saw a hammer head for sale for like 350 online. I was hoping to go with 2 Vectra returns and a Vectra closed loop with one one mp60 on one end with the gyre on the other. I'm fairly certain I can mask the wiring of the internal pumps with the wall and live rock. I'm sure I can use you and Pedro's advice for certain things. I'm thinking of maybe adding another gyre on the opposite end as well. Now I get the fun part you mentioned last time. I love flow!! I'm debating lighting as well. Maybe add 2 400 watt halides to 4 LED systems or 6 LED systems. Hmmm this is where one wrong decision ends up costing you later on

Hi all. Waiting to close either tomorrow or Tuesday. Anyhow ordered the NYOS 300 Skimmer for the 720 and the 220 for the 240. Im thinking to start with 2 LED's on each system while it cycles as most things can wait until a later time. Thinking of starting with return pumps, 2 LED Live sand and LR. Then adding the additional equipment in time. Maybe throw 15 Green Chromis to the 720 and 5 to the 240 for awhile which I hope will help me grow copepods with limited predation. Thoughts?

Where did you get the stand done and powder coated? How much did the stand and powder coat run? $1-2k?
