Ya, the footprint is on his website. Give yourself some wiggle room.
I run the mag 12 pump that came with the skimmer.

Eheim 1262 is at the low end of flow for a VS3-30, you might want to look at a Laguna 1500

The skimmer can be used externally as well if need be. It doesn't have to sit in a sump. Mine is outside the stand. I have the 30" as well.

if that post was for me, i prefer in sump if i can. two german shepherds and 3 cats says its too risky to have it where they can get to it.

It seems to work fine, I get plenty of flow through the skimmer and some really nasty nog production.

Does it take more energy to feed it externally vs internal? I may have an opportunity to choose either way in the future but have always felt safer running internal in case of any kind of overflow. Wondering if there is any advantage to running external besides less heat transfer from the pump.

Hi Dennis, believe it or not I am using a Mag 12. Water pumps out same way as internal (straight up) but then I have a 90 with tubing running out through the side of the stand with the skimmer sitting outside. The return goes back through the side of the stand and into a bulkhead in the sump.
There should be no difference running internal or external except maybe more pump options and therefore possibly different performance levels due to the flow rates with those pumps. I can tell you that I have been playing around with the MTC skimmer using a Blueline 30 and 40 and you so hear them. They are not loud but compared to a Mag pump which you don't hear anything, there is the fan noise. I don't think there is any reason to switch locations unless you need the sump space. As Jeff said to me, the skimmer doesn't know if the skimmer is inside or outside. |

Go to the skimmer section of lifereef.com
Jeff uses that skimmer on his own tank. I think I recall him saying he built it 10-15 years ago

Flow through the sump doesn't matter with the skimmer. Most recommend a 6-10x tank volume turn over rate through the sump. But that won't affect 5 he performance of the skimmer.
Ideally you want your overflow to be skimming the thinnest layer of water possible. IME most standard tank overflows can't do this well so it's a mute point unless you are going custom

The skimmers performance won't be affected by your turn over rate.
I have a mag12 return and a mag9 on my skimmer. I was thinking about swapping them since I actually divert water back into the sump to control my layer of water being skimmed out of the tank. Can't wait to get my custom tank delivered in about 3 weeks with a 42" external overflow :-)

I am setting up a 190gallon SPS tank using Zeovit. Is it recommended to use a Venturi or Beckett style skimmer. Does anyone have any recommendations? How quiet are the skimmers?

I have a Jebao 6000 asa return pump. Tried it on my 30in skimmer and did not drive it as good as the Mag 12. So Im sticking with the mag

Other than cleaning the cup, this skimmer is pretty much maintenance free.
