Removing pods from filter sponge

I have a filter sponge in the back of my IM Lagoon 50 that I haven’t cleaned in a long time......

It is absolutely covered in pods(amphipods I believe). I would like to replace the sponge but not lose all of the pods. Any suggestions. It’s just a 4”x3”x2” filter sponge I have in one of my media baskets.

Or should I just leave it be?

Just shake the sponge vigorously in a small bucket of salt water. Your not going to get all the pods, but you should get quite a few. (along with some detritus) Pour all this back into the tank and replace the old sponge with a new one. Piece of cake.

You can put some tank water in a container. Place a piece of egg crate over the container. Shake them out and leave it for a while. A lot should drop off. You can also put the sponge in a bunch of macro algae and they will move over to the macro algae.
