Yellow Tang and Blue Hippo Tang

Hi All,

I have heard that I should not keep more than one tang of its own species in one tank. however Im wondering if blue hippo tang and yellow tang would be peaceful together as I have seen a lot of people having them in their tank together. I have a 120G tank with 120p LR.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Bijan

Is your tank a 120 or 125 like your sig says? They should get along in most tanks but then swim room becomes the question. Both these tangs can get good size and both like to swim. IMHO a 4'-5' tank is not enough swim room for tangs.

I think the general rule if you're keeping tangs together is don't keep ones that look similar to each other (shape and colour). If you're keeping more than one, then you need a bigger tank to they can chill out away from each other. How long is your tank?

Yeah they "SHOULD" get along, there might be some posturing and chasing for the first few weeks to establish dominants but eventually they "SHOULD" get along. I have a yellow tang and a powder blue tang living together, and they went round and round for about a week.

4' is considered the minimum for 1 tang, with 2, you should be looking at 6' minimum, I would think.

Because I developed on your point. You see, that's how a conversation works.

Ok then lets "develope" on your point. All tangs are different and 4' might be considered min for certain tangs but not for all tangs. For some tangs 6' is considered the min.

My thing was saying what my opinion is thus why I said IMHO (in my humble opinion).

Your statement sounded more like you were more trying to contradict me. Sorry that I read it wrong.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to. I think with 4-5' minimum for a blue OR yellow tang (individually), and agree that for two, 4-5' isn't enough swimming room, because that's only a minimum for 1 fish, and they need their own space.

I think a lot has to do with how you have the LR situated as well. if the rock is so congested that the tangs can't swim freely then the they won't be too happy.

Mine get along just fine.

my tank is 48"x24"x24" , if the tangs get too big I can always sell them back to the LFS.

I have a tank that is less than 125 gallons with both a hippo and yellow tang and they get along great. They are inseparable; wherever the yellow tang goes the hippo follows.

Thanks all, my tank is 6' long and my LR is mostly situated on the bottom, so upper half of the tank is free for swimming. I already have a Blue Hippo tang. he/she used to swim all across the tank for a few days when I introduced him to the tank but recently he is only hanging out in a territory around the center of the tank. he is about 2 inches and Im looking to buy a small yellow if you guys approve.

I think they'll be okay. You might find rearranging your rock will help to dissipate aggression; the hippo will have to make a new territory, and the yellow can find one too.

Lol MHannon i had the same thing with my hippo and yellow tang, guess its all just how they are and how they feel.
I don't think i would be a problem.... just put the yellow tang in last, the hippo always seems to be more mellow ?!

I have a false percula (cant really count the spines so for the price I paid Im assuming its a false percula). Im looking to find a reefsafe peaceful fish. love the angels and other tangs but they all seem to be either aggressive or not reef safe. any suggestions?

I have a 120 48/24/24 with a yellow and a hippo and there find have had them in there for over 8 yrs no problems. You have to watch out for the tang police here though there are a few people that go nuts over the possibility of miss treatment of these fish.Kind of like Peta NUTTS!!!

How about adding a wrasse or two or three?? They are brilliantly colored and would look awesome swimming around your tank

A small shoal of anthias would also look spectacular.
