Jebao powerheads... never again
Just wanted to share my story... I've gone through 3 of these powerheads in two years. They just burn out on me... I do switch them on and off frequently, but that shouldn't kill them if you ask me.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Anyone have any suggestions on better brands? |

Anything not Jebao, lol.
EcoTech or Tunze are typically the go-to for DC powerheads. |

I got 5 months out my wp-40, the coil burned out. Just bought a Coral Box qp from Reef Breeders. 1 year warranty. If this fails, time for a Tunze or Eco Tech.

Even three of them in two years is cheaper than 1 ecotech, and at least the jeabos interior magnet doesn't become compromised and rust apart and degrade your entire livestock. I bought jeabos hoping to have them work for a year, and any longer is a bonus. They're cheap, but I've had zero issues with all 5 of mine, and two of them haven't been cleaned in 16 months.

Powerhead will fail too soon if you frequently turn it off and on. How frequent are you talking about?

I had good luck with my rw8, been running for several years. Now my pp15 is the opposite. At about a year, it just stopped. I removed it for a week or so, then took a look at it, nothing seized up. I cleaned it & put it back and it fired back up. Now, about a month later it's off, but this time the controller only has 1 light (mode light) flashing. When I unplug the pump plug, it lights up normal. Not sure what's wrong, but they are kind of crappy pumps. I put my old koralia in, just can't put it on a wave maker, but they just work. Nothing more frustrating than a pump that won't work.

i dunno what the heck some people do to jebaos to kill them so quickly, i bought 6 rw8s that were used already for 1+ year when i got them from the previous owner, and im going on year 2 myself on all of them, not a single failure yet. ( so 3 years total )
i havn't even needed replacement parts yet. i clean them regularly once a month or so in vinegar, sooner if i see them start slowing down noticeably. thats literally all there is to it. and i got all 6 rw8s for less than half the price of a new mp40qd.

I have two in my tank (RW8 & RW4) for more than a year. So far no issue, as long as you clean it regularly or when there is significant pumping power reduction.
Edit: I thought we are talking about pump here LOL

IMHO almost anything Jebao does new is very shaky at best, let it get to the 2nd or 3rd generation (like 6 months or a year, LOL!) and they are much better. I have Jebao return pumps that have been running for 3 and 4 years. I have old and new wavemakers. The old ones had issues and about a 50% to 75% failure rate over time. But the newer ones have been in use for a couple of years and not a single failure. The first CrossFlow was worse that the first Maxspect Gyre... well, maybe not. But I have 3 that are newer generations (which only took a couple of months... and I got them free under distributor warranty) and they have all run fine for the last 6 to 9 months.
And I know I haven't spent 50% of what the high end stuff cost, even with all the failures.

no complaint with Jebao.
Their price really helps being in this hobby. and we all should thanks to them that has kept Ecotech price down. Remember Ecotech price used to be $500 each for the MP40 back in 2012. Here is my experience with Jebao i used the Wp40 and WP15 for 2 years without any issue before I downgraded tank and sold them. I now have 2 rw8 on my current tank for 2 years now without any problem. I just clean them every 5-6 months interval. |

I'm happy with my SW-15's. I bought them about 7 months ago. One of them died about a month in, but the quick warranty swap out (thanks to Saltwateraquarium.com), I was up and running again within a day. Since then, the two of them (one original) have been running solid on my tank.
As others have said, they are a fraction of the price of these big names. If I have to swap them yearly, I'm prepared for that. Anything more is a bonus. They aren't the most crucial item in my tank, so I'll take the chances. If they fail, my dual return nozzles still produce a small amount of flow and plenty of surface agitation.

two rw-8 for 2 yrs no issues. i think the frequent on off killed it. i find that mines would stall if i accidently turn if off then on.

To me they have been hit & miss, kinda the luck of the draw. I have a old wp 10 & wp 25 going on three years that are still going. I also have a rw 4 that I've had between 1 & 2 years. As far as the bad, I had a pp-15, pp-4 & cp-40 all die within 6 months of purchase. So some last & some don't.

They do crap out often. Ive ran the WP25(first gen) for about two years until it quit. That was my record. Ive had their doser freeze after a year and almost nuked my tank.
I had a return pump last a month and stop. Lost the receipt and couldnt return it. That was it for me

Running two WP-40's for three years now and both power supplies have failed within two weeks of one another. One is back up and running just waiting for the other power supply.

I'm with slief, Tunze all the way. I had two rw4's and had to clean them all the time or the power would diminish and I had to adjust the settings in my apex to make up for it, PITA. One failed within 6 months and the other kept going. I like that they are cheap, but you get what you pay for and as long as you're aware of that and are willing to keep up on the maintenance, go for it. Plus, the downtime, buying replacements, it's just not worth it to me.
I like reliability, so I'm sticking with Tunze. |

I bought a older jebao wp25 series over 2 years ago never a cleaning running 24/7 no issues strong as ever. On the other hand the one before that a WP40 lasted 3 years but slowly over time lost its strength and soon died cleanings didn't help. So for $50 bucks to get over 2 years is to me worth the investment. Really not hard to reach in and swap out with a new one.

I have 2 jebao sw-2.
They produce great flow and are powerful but they hve an issue maintaining it. Mine will work great all day, next morning the power has slowed down to the point that my corals move slowly. I then have to turn them on and off to regain the proper flow output. My night mode is not set. Very annoying! |
