Sump design feedback
Well I just picked up this Reef octopus for my new build and now I can finish my sump.
I don't have the dimensions on hand but you can see the general idea. The refugium will be around 7-8 gal. depending on what the final baffle height will be set at. |

I'm not understanding where the water will come into your sump. Are you putting your inlet in the refuge area, or where the skimmer is? Either way, your refuge will be stagnated with poor water flow.
Is that a 20h tank? |

Water will enter the sump in the skimmer side. Fuge will receive water via a T fitting branched off the return pump.
Poor water flow can be address with the addition of some sort of pump/powerhead. The tank is a 29 gal. |

FWIW that 29g is a tall tank and will be a pain in the but to work in. You may want to take the opportunity now before you are too deep into this to get a better tank for the sump.

If your lines are correct, it looks like the return section will carry about 5g or less of water. Evaporation will make this section drop very quickly and you may find yourself having a pump that runs dry without daily top ups. |

The DT will be 75 gal. The tank will sit on a stand I built so I made sure there was enough room to access everything inside the stand. The bottom of the tank is 40" off the floor just to give you an idea of the size. I don't remember the inside measurements of the cabinet but I've tested it and it seems to be enough room.
As far as topping off goes I have an ATO and I was planning on putting it inside the return area so my water lever can be managed from there. Thoughts on this? I've attached a picture of the stand just to give you an idea of the size. |

I thought that you wanted the water coming into the FUGE prior to going though the skimmer... could be wrong though.
I read everything here... http://www.reefaquarium.com/2012/some-sump-basics/ |

Here are some better pictures of the stand with the sump inside (floor still has to be finished). I will either do a gravity fed ATO or use the JBJ that I have and install a container on the right to hold the water.
And from my research you want the water to enter your fuge after it has gone through the skimmer. |

That stand looks amazing want to build me one? Only thing I would recommend if you haven't already done it is to make a drip tray to collect water splashes. That hardwood floor looks mighty expensive.

Hey nice work on the stand.
My suggestion for a drip tray is go get some pond liner /45mil epdm roofing membrane and staple or tack it around the back and under your sump. You'll be happy you did for nothing more then salt creep. Dont staple where you intend on having it retain water. Best scenario, if you have a way to sneak a piece of 3/4" or larger flex tube from your aquarium base to a drain somewhere (downstairs laundry tub for instance), you can tap a bulkhead into the liner installation and have a much safer setup with respect to flooding. |
