Need New Water Pump for my 29 Gallon BioCube

I need some Help.

The Stock water pump in my 29 Gallon BioCube is progressively getting louder. It sounds like it is going to go soon, so I want to replace it before it does.

The tank is in my bedroom so I want to get as quiet of a pump as possible.

I was thinking an upgrade might be in order. I see that many people have switched to the Maxijet 900. I have 2 questions about that upgrade, 1, is it loud?, 2, does it fit in the original water pump spot with out any mods?

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Perhaps I should just get another stock pump?

Thank you!!

Maxijets are great and they are quiet. Are you sure its the 900 and not the 1200 model that most people upgrade too? I upgraded my Biocube pump as well and now I can't remember.

Have you taken it apart and cleaned it in Vinegar?

@ Pisc, I have not seen anyone mention the 1200. Did that fit in the BioCube? there is very little room.

@ Strike, I did not even think if that. I will try that first. Thank you.

I had a 1200 in back or my nanocube. My nano has almost same space as my 14 biocube. The 1200 will def fit and was a good pump.

I have a 900 in mine. It's nearly identical in flow rate to the stock pump, fits without modification, and is completely silent.

+1 might just be calcium build up in the pump... I would try this first.

Try cleaning it first, then if you still want to upgrade go to a Rio HF6 and get some Eheim tubing on it so you can get rid of the stock elbow they use..... HUGE difference when I had my BC29. I modded mine years ago, I'll see if there are still pictures on N-R

I cant believe after 4 years that thread is still there... LOL

Size comparison between the two pumps:

New connection with Eheim 16/22 tubing:

The newfound flow was too much for the front left corner sand to handle so I divided the flow which worked out great:

New "Y" locline in the tank:

Tried to make the flow more random by cutting down a hydor-flo and attaching it to one end of the "Y"..... It worked well to help make the flow more random, but didn't look too good:

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE REPLIES!

But I have what seems to be an important question.

I can not Find the Maxi-Jet 1200, submersible water pump

I found the 900 and I found the 1100

I did see a Maxijet 1200 power head.

I am going to purchase the 1100 today, does that sound right?

yes, Maxi-Jet 1100 Submersible Utility Pump is correct...not a powerhead

You want to use a MJ1200 powerhead. Their idea of a powerhead is a submersible pump turned sideways....

I believe the only difference between the 900 and the 1200 is the size of the shroud that houses the impellar. The 1200 is about 1/8" taller.

I am not familiar with the nanos and the size limitations that you are facing, but that 1/8" could be important.

How about a ehime, could you fit an appropriate ehime in there? Ehime have always been really cool running, last forever and dead silent.
