Return Pump rates with no refugium
For a 65 gallon tank with a 20-25 gallon sump. No refugium, just skimmer (XP1000sss), TurboTwist 18 watt 6x hooked up to an MJ1200. Dosers are also hooked in.
Currently there's a Rio 2100 hooked up as the main return. At a 4ft head height, it's delivering about 375 GPH. I've been thinking about upgrading to a pump that delivers 529 or 690 at 4ft. Just wondering if it makes sense to do so for a sump that has no refugium. Are skimmers and UV more efficient with higher turn overs or lower? |

You need to check with the manufacterer to get the best kill rate for your UV sterilizer but usually it's slower to increase exposure time. I don't use skimmers but 5X turnover seems suffecient to me. I'm assuming you have powerheads or something to provide good flow in tank.

Yeah there's far too much flow in the tank, might be removing an MP10 as the two WP25s are a bit much with an MP10 in there as well.
Yes, as far as the UV, I'll be switching it out to an MJ400 as the MJ1200 is too much. At a bit more than 100gph, the MJ400 with 18 watt should easily kill Ich if it actually reaches the sump. However, I'm more curious if it's efficient for the skimmer to have a higher turn over rate in the sump or lower. |
