Thanks for the quick response! Do you like the tunze? How has it been working for you?

The Tunze works incredibly well. It pulled darker skimmate the first day then I ever got out of the stock skimmer. I now have a sump/refugium set up with my Max and have the tunze in there. I ran it for a few weeks in the back of the Max but had to take off the rear cover in order for it to fit. I know some people mod'd the skimmer cup to keep the rear cover on.

Can a different temp light bulb be used, or it the only option the stock 55W 10k?

Those are the only lights that will fit properly so yes those are the only option. The lights are not bad. Most of us have been able to keep just about anything in our RSM with the stock lighting with no real issues other than having to place certain corals at different heights in the water. Some people have opted to remove the stock hood all together and go with metal halide lighting as an option.

AH Supply (http://www.ahsupply.com/bulbs.htm) carries several different bulbs that will fit (55w PC with the straight pin base) and even has one that is identified as a 10000K/Actinic, but I have one and it is not the same color as the ones that came with the Red Sea Max (At least when it is running on the ballast supplied by AH Supply.)

I doubt that you will find a better bulb than the one from Red Sea for a reef tank.

I would stick with the stock bulbs, they are by far the brightest

going to be getting some frogspawn and red/orange zoos soon and some softies/leathers.

Also contemplating between a flame hawk or a sixline wrasse. Any opinion on one or the other?

Anyone know where to buy replacement parts for RSM? The hood on mine has been problematic. I need to replace the fan (buzzes loudly) and the time has stopped working. TIA

ok, got my RSM running, but i cant run both of the powerheads because i guess they put out off the water in the chamber and creates bubles, is there a way to prevent this?

Try the FAQ here: http://www.redseamax.com/redseamax/2...FAQ130.html#_5

or the "unofficial" one here: http://www.reefsuk.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=27889

sounds like you have a supply issue somewhere in the tank preventing enough water come in. Carbon bag, sponge floss etc.

Hey guys,

First time poster, total newbie, wanting to get a smaller aquarium to get started. I'm trying to read as much as I can on this site and to say it's sensory overload is an understatement.

I thought the sound of an "all-in-one" unit would be best for someone like me and I like the looks of the RSM. I found one for sale on my local Craigs list for $375, does that sound like a good deal? Anything I should look for or ask when buying a used unit?

I notice alot of experienced folks have done quite a few mods. Any must-do EASY mods IYO? I've been trying to read this entire thread but's its kind of hard since it's been chopped to pieces.

Feel free to PM. Thanks in advance...

Steve

Welcome to Reef Central!
That sounds like a killer deal to me, considering I just bought mine for $800!!!
I can't wait to get it going!

Many mods, but there's loads of Max owners running successful unmodded tanks. I'd be inclined to give it six months to prove itself before you start spending money on what could be unnecessary additions - that's not to say there's anything wrong with modding the Max, it's just that IMHO the amount of people modding sometimes gives the incorrect impression that it needs to be modded.

My concern with the lights temp is not the brightness, but rather the color. I feel like colors don't pop as much as they do under the T5 actinics I have in my 75 (together with MH's). I just wish we could have one 20k bulb and one 10k, just to add a little blue. I'll keep searching.

you can, you may loose some intensity but you can replace the stock bulbs with PC bulbs to produce the coloring you like.

you will have to cut the hood up to make that work. I have not seen any one put anything but a MH retro fit in that area.

I have seen bulbs installed into the first lid, where the testing equipment slots are.

Unhappy

Say -- has anyone found their water pumps' impeller shafts rusted and broken off within months of running a new RSM? I'm wondering if this is causing me problems with a whack of microbubbles forming when I first turn the pumps on for approx. 5 mins? I'm also having problems just getting the pumps to start consistently now.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like you need new pumps. Contact red sea for replacements, they shouldn't be doing anything that you describe.

Hey Steve-

I emailed you the other day.....can you PM me your website for the media rack and collection cups????

FYI-- My lsf has a bulb that is slightly higher wattage and works fine. My buddy has had them in his RSM for a while now.

Yes, I will shoot you a PM. I am sorry if I didn't respond, I don't think I received it since I am really connected to email.

Is it a 65W PC bulb? I know they will work and some have done it in the past. Personally, I believe the RSM bulbs put out more light.

Reefmack can be found regularly on 'Reef Sanctuary', especially in the 'Red Sea Max Owners Club' section
