Lanthanum for live rock

I have a thread on phosphate reduction on my 300 gallon stock tank, but what I really want is to take some live rock out of the tank and put it in a holding container to remove phosphate quickly. Is this possible?

Yes, that works well, too. Just add a pump to keep some circulation going in the container. If you want to keep the bacterial population, a heater and saltwater would be enough. Fresh water is fine for removing phosphate, though.

Thanks. I have a 44 gallon trash can, I can fill it to 20 gallons and add a few pieces of rock at a time. Any idea on how much to dose daily? I壇 keep it heated and circulated to keep the beneficial bacteria and critters alive.

I'd just toss some into the water, then wait a bit for the water to clear, and then add a bit more, until the precipitate stopped forming, or there was less precipitate. There's not much downside to adding a fair amount at once. The lanthanum might combine with carbonate and drop the alkalinity, but that's not much of an issue when cleaning live rock.

Unfortunately, I don't have any useful guidelines for dosing. I don't think we even have the concentration of the products. We could compute the amount to dose given the concentration of lanthanum and the phosphate level, up to the limits of solubility of lanthanum phosphate (the precipitate), anyway.

Thanks, Jon!

I値l add several rocks to the tub after rinsing them off real good in saltwater, then put them in the tub circulating with warmed saltwater. I値l wait a few days and check phosphate, then start dosing the lanthanum. I値l update here as I see what happens.

Check my thread out. It shows rough dosing regimes.

Just adding more LaCl won't do much, you need to give it time to come out of the rock. It takes time because the LaCl precipitates the phosphates out of the water. Once the water is low (you don't need much LaCl) the phosphates move from the rock into the water. I probably wouldn't dose more than once per day and would do so until you can leave the rock alone for a week and the phosphates don't rise. Use a Hanna 736ULR Checker to test the phosphates.

Thanks. I致e got the big fancy Hanna kit that uses 93713.

I agree that the leeching takes some time. If you get some estimates of the required dosing amount, that'd be very interesting.
