10 gallon tank ok for pipefish or seahorse

I currently have a pea puffer in the tank and wasn't sure since there wasn't much flow in the tank if it would be alright to add a seahorse or pipefish to it. I'm guessing the answer is going to be no but I figured this would be the right spot to ask!

Thanks!

You figured correctly. You could go with a faux seagrass setup using Caulerpa prolifera and keep some dwarf pugnose pipes in the tank, or if you don't mind hatching live food (Artemia) on a daily basis, you could keep zots (dwarf SH). HOWEVER, the puffer would be a terrible tankmate for either as they tend to be pretty "nippy".

Even slighty brackish water will quickly kill a dwarf puffer. Keeping any fish in conditions not normal for the fish will compromise it's immune system & greatly shorten it's lifespan. Forcing a FW fish into SW is a sure death sentence. Never mind the pain it is suffering from osmotic pressure it's not equipped to regulate as a FW animal. Nothing funny at all about what you are doing to it. Please drip that puffer back to FW ASAP!!! Do the right thing & be a responsible fish keeper.

Well thanks for the negative thread...

I'm not looking to punish the fish. I bought it from the LFS and they said it would be fine in salt. If your telling me differently then I will look into it but they had theirs as well in a full salt system. Kind of odd that they had 20-30 of them and they seemed fine. I have had this fish for 2 months now and seems happy.

Maybe your ID is incorrect? If you've been around this hobby any length of time, you should know to do your own research & not trust ANYTHING a LFS tells you. A pic would help a ton here. This is the normally-called, "pea" puffer:

shes only looking out for the best interest in the puffer. im sure no sort of personal attack was meant. many people are mis-informed about puffers, especially pet stores because half of them out there dont actually care to be knowledgeable about what they stock and will sell tanks/setups and fish just for the money brought into the store. and if you are mis-informed(whether they mean to or not, its more business to the store if you decide to keep replacing dying fish). the only way to truely tell if you have a pea puffer is to post a picture of it. i could see how this fish could easily be mistaken by someone that isnt as knowledgeable(either a collector or pet store) for a green spotted puffer. check out the links im posting and see which, if either of these, looks more like your puffer. or post a picture and we can properly identify it for you. if it is a green spotted puffer, some changes will need to be made for the well being of the fish because the green spotted gets way bigger than a pea/dwarf puffer. my guess is that since its been ok in SW for at least the two months you have had it, that it is a green spotted. but check out the two links and post a picture of yours if you can

I guess it's not a pea puffer. I was told that's what it was. It's the green spotted based on your thread. Thanks!

I'm a little worried now seeing that they can get up to 6.5"!!!!!!!

It should be fine in the tank for now but once it starts to grow a little I'm getting it out of the tank.

Good, it's a GSP.

Imagine that, a pet shop with a fish name mislabeled.

He should be OK in the 10g if <2" but must be moved into a larger tank when it gets any larger than that. Preferably, 30+g:

Good thing you didn't try to add any tank mates...

Do you have plans to upgrade him? If not, maybe you should return him. Unless you got him from Walmart. Did you read my article on that species? They require much more care & different foods than most fish.

As of right now I don't plan on upgrading the tank but we will see once he starts to grow a little bit. I didn't get it from Walmart. Food wise I actually go to some of the local petstores and grab their snails out of the tanks and feed them two to three times a week. The fish really seems to enjoy it.
