75 Gallon Peninsula Reef-Light Fixture help!

I am in the process of starting a 75 Gallon Peninsula (thread that will come soon). I got everything in order and what needs to be done, but the lighting. I have two individual halide light fixtures on my existing tank that can be clipped on the back of the tank.

But instead of clipping to the tank or a hood, I want the lights to hang from a steel rod which hovers over the tank and is clamped to the side of the stand. I would like to have the wires of the light/fans to run through the rod. Also, how high should the lights be from the surface?

Has anyone ever done this? Got Pictures/advice?
